PAG
i just finished changing the front ball joints, and i still have a "clunk" in the front end when turning the wheel, it looks like the strut spring is getting bound up? Is there a why to lubricate or just replace the struts? What struts are worth buying, and will they be compatiable with the ride control? With 142K i would imgine replacing would be beneficial to the ride quality! Thanks! PG 1992 Fleetwood 1995 Impala SS 1999 Z56 Tahoe
Scotty
Ah yes, that is a good diagnosis! See this recent post by Kger2 he had exactly the same symptom and it ended up being his strut mount/bearing: http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=7576&hl=
PAG
Thanks Scotty.........good stuff mate! I will have a lookie see, and see how tuff the bearing is to replace, first off, i guess i will need to invest in a spring compressor in order to complete this repair. cheers
Scotty
Glad to help, Kger2 will chime in here I am sure, he was there when his mechanic did the work. If you do it yourself, you can use a spring compressor or take the strut assembly to an alignment shop or machine shop to have them install the new strut bearing/mount. You will need an alignment, unless you mark everything carefully and use a level to get it close.
Scotty
Here is the strut assembly from a 96 Deville, I am not sure what the 92 looks like, I also have the 91 manual and will try to post that strut assembly. On my car, #2 is the strut mount and bearing if I am not mistaken, it weighs a ton...
Regis
I have the exact same diagram in my 94 service manual Scotty. Not absolutely positive but i believe the bearing sits between the strut mount and the spring seat. I know it's a part of the strut mount. Nice thing is that the bearing can be purchased alone. $25/each at Napa for my 94sts. The bearing is actually shaped like a flat donut ring (approx. 3/8 to half an inch in thickness and about 5 inches in diameter. It looks like something you'd buy in one of those Dollar Stores. Regis
That white part is the bearing. If you grab ahold of it, you'll notice it turns (spins). It should just pull out. PAG
Thanks big time........if i have to remove the strut, more then likely i will install new ones. The front is pretty soft, while the rear seams stiffer. Actually, when i had the front up yesterday the compressor was running and it leveled the rear of the car......pretty wild! I do like the fact that i can purchase the bearing seperatly, since Christmas is coming, if i can repair bearing for now till hoildays past then purchase some new struts, thats prolly what i'll do. What brand/make do you recommend? Thanks again Gents........very helpful indeed! PG 1992 Fleetwood 1995 Impala SS (Green) 1999 Z56 Tahoe
Scotty
It is unlikely that you will be able to buy OEM electronic struts for your car. Boston Suspension does not appear to list your car but you may be able to call them to see if they have any ideas http://www.bostonsuspension.com/ I don't see any listing for your car here either but call them http://www.arnottindustries.com/ Do a search to see what others have done with the 92. I believe that you will only be able to go with a passive (non electronic) strut. Check these guys for some ideas also: http://www.strutmasters.com/ I quickly did a search at http://www.monroe.com and it appears that they have a solution for your car (go to catalog lookup). I didn't know the specifics of your car however they showed info for front and rear wheel drive vehicles, check them out Mike
