Auto: 91 Eldo

Starting Mileage: 183090

Ending Mileage: 193380

Trip Mileage = 10290

D.I.C. MPG = 36.1

Just got home from my annual "Fall trip" to see all kids, grandkids, and other relatives and friends. Left San Jose, CA Sept. 19th for Vancouver, BC then to Minneapolis, MN and on to Kennybunkport, ME to Raleigh, NC to St.Louis, MO to Denver, CO to Flagstaff, AR and home to San Jose on Oct. 26th.

Great trip - great fun - car performed flawlessly !

Interesting note - using Sunoco "93" Eldo idled rough but using Sunoco "91" idle was smooth as silk.

Can't complain about about MPG !

I'll take a pic of the DIC and post it just to have some evidence that Jack isn't stretching things a bit !

Hey if you say so, but I must say, 36.1 MPG is pretty amazing. I owned a 91 Seville, and NEVER got that... not even close, maybe 24 or 25 max. What was your average speed do you think? Are you a 50 to 55 MPH type of driver?

36.1 blink.gif no kidding! Did you reset Average economy right before the trip and did not touch (reset) it during the whole trip? Unbeliveable! Perhaps your ignition timing is not factory set 10 degrees but less (8?). My car performs better with 89.

This is when common sense should prevail. If the DIC read 50mpg would you still believe it? Nothing beats a pen and paper and figuring the mileage manually. Heck I can get my DIC to read at least 36mpg for a photo opp. That doesn't mean it's accurately recording the actual mileage though.

But this does bring up an issue that I've been wondering about. If I press the Information button on the DIC and scroll through things like Battery charge, Oil life, engine temp, etc. I notice two Mileage sections so to speak. One is about 36 while the other one is substantially lower like 24. Anyone care to explain them to me? The lower one seems to fluctuate and mirror what the average mileage reading is on the far left side of the console. The higher (36) one never seems to change when i scroll by it. Just curious.

That may be but it doesn't mirror the instant read out. It does mirror the average reading I get on the litle mileage window on the far left. As far as the 36 reading... if that's supposed to mirror the average then i can tell you that it is way off. Don't get me wrong. I love my caddy but wrong is wrong. Perhaps it logs the highest average for any trip (from ignition start to ignition shutdown). I could believe that. I've taken a few short downhill trips around the area (probably less than a mile) and can be certain that I was getting at least in the 30s.... because it was all down hill and hardly any throttle.

My guess is the actual fuel mileage is lower than the indicated figure. It is possible that more fuel than expected (by the PCM) is being delivered. I would examine the right and left Block Learn values. The mileage figure is calculated from the injector 'on' time, and the expected fuel flow (based on fuel pressure and injector characteristics). If more than an expected amount of fuel is being delivered (leaky injectors, worn injectors, high fuel pressure, leaking fuel pressure regulator, etc.), the PCM will reduce the injector 'on' time in response to buffered oxygen sensor values, and the calculated fuel consumption will decrease, resulting in a higher apparent fuel mileage.

I may be wrong but isn't one average MPG (miles per gallon) and the other is Average MPH (miles per hour) ?

No, you are not wrong. There is an average MPG and MPH. That thought had crossed my mind as well.

That actually makes much more sense. Boy will JackH be disappointed when he discovers the MPG is 23 or so, which in itself is NOT all that bad with an average MPH of 36.1 laugh.gif

laugh.gif how can I get that data on my DIC?

Adallak, I forget what my 91 would read out on the DIC in terms of its monitoring capabilities, it provides MPG and Instant MPG, but does it provide Average Miles per hour speed (MPH)?

Maybe what we are thinking of is the Average speed (MPH) that my car provides. I like to watch how MPG is affected by MPH.

Scotty,

I do not think DIC on 91 Seville shows average MPH. Only instant and average MPG. As for average MPG versus average MPH, there should be an optimum range of speeds. Driving slowly does not necessarily save you money. Driving below the speed where the torque converter locks up is definitely not a good idea. That would be very interesting (new topic?) if people describe and discuss their driving techniques and manners. I know many drivers who never switch to 3,2,1 gear...They do not even know what they are for.
