67coupedeville
I am on another snowmobile forum and I was reading through a post and there was this little picture at the bottom of this guys post, like a signature saying: "my I.P. address, my ISP is sk.ca, I am running Windows XP, and IE6. So tell me man, are you nervous with the service?" danasoft.com Can he tell me all that because I am not up on my security on my computer or is that just some kind of prank? Bruce Nunnally
Yes, the website can tell that that stuff. Should you care? Not much. Well, the website needs to know the browser because they respond differently to html, which is a mostly but not completely standard standard. Which ISP you have is just a matter of where you came to the site from; does NOT mean they have access to your PC. Your ISP is very security conscious usually. Operating system is like browser, it helps the website to present the page properly for your pc if it knows which one you have. Spence Knowing your IP address is something a website has to know. It's like a mailman trying to deliver a letter to you without an address on it, it just won't get there. So long as you are running a router and a software firewall on your machine, you should be safe. If you really want to make people safe drivers again then simply remove all the safety features from cars. No more seat belts, ABS brakes, traction control, air bags or stability control. No more anything. You'll see how quickly people will slow down and once again learn to drive like "normal" humans.
Regis
Usually grabbing that type of information is done by host access, host/administrator isn't up to date on patches and security, or your clicking on a posted link that takes you off the site and to a secondary site owned by the offender which he can monitor and grab unsecured info. Happens a lot and most people don't even know it. Also there are little programs that allow a person to capture IPs and other information in chatrooms/forums that are laxed on security. This person is obviously a forum squatter that gets his/her kicks reading and scrolling through logs just to annoy people. This person is most likely harmless because the people that can really do the damage don't normally go around advertising on billboards to the world. I would, however, get your security up to par. Think of it as buying a house in a rough area of town and filling it with brand new funiture, stereo, plasma tvs, etc but neglecting to put locks, drapes and blinds, and a security system up. rgnoon
Chances are good that it was some script kiddy runing a little live js anyway...you were the only one seeing it. On a forum like that, the average schmo user (the site admin is slightly different) wouldn't likely easily be able to actually retrieve that....you're the only one seeing it. If you wanted to shoot me the link I could tell you for sure (if you're not comfortable with that, I obviously understand). But as stated above...I wouldn't worry too much about it, it's not much of a threat...if you are particularly worried about it, call your ISP and have them reset your connection, or just unplug from the wall, power cycle and plug back in. Again...my advice...don't sweat it. -Ryan (IT/Network Security Student)

Exactly right - those Java applets basically tell YOU what YOU'RE running..they might seem alarming at first, but when you realize what they are, it's a no-brainer. Nothing to be concerned about. You can do darn near the same thing with DOS batch language. rgnoon
But of course, unfortunately though, I can tell you that far more recent staples in the developement of the digital world around us are hardly even mentioned as "legacy" in textbooks and classrooms throughout the country, while such crucial technologies are still responsible for keeping our financial, medical and transportation industries in motion....not to even mention the government and military... It's a shame...we're going to have some interesting problems in a few years when there's nobody left to run the mainframes and tape libraries that were manufactured before many of us were digesting solid foods. - Sorry, not meant to be depressing...but to invoke techy nostalgia instead!
