terrylange
The 2001 DTS that I purchased last week just had the coolant changed within the last thousand miles. Whatever was in it was replaced with the green coolant. I just drained off a little more than one gallon for the purpose of putting the coolant supplement in the rad hose. I bought Dexcool to refill it with, but now wonder if there is a risk in introducing dexcool if the majority of the coolant still in the system is the green type. I'd like to get this project wrapped up within the next couple of hours, if possible. Any ideas as to what I should top it up with? Thanks!! Ranger
Don't mix them. Since it has green in it you are now relegated to 2 yr coolant changes, even if you switch back to Dex-Cool as the cooling system has been plated with silicates so you may as well stick with green. adallak
Once green coolant was used it does not make sense to use DexCool since the system has already been silicated. Keep it green, change regularly and you should be fine. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
terrylange
Thanks to both of you for your quick response. Not only did you save me $23.00 (I can take the two gallons of Dexcool back to Kragen for a refund), but your quick replies allowed me to get this project wrapped up before dark. Since the fluid I drained out was new and clean, I just poured it back in again.

Unless you know when the coolant was last changed, you should change it - the corrosion inhibitors in the coolant can be completely depleted yet it will still look bright green. It's unfortunate that so many people out there (dealers, mechanics, DIYers) are draining Dexcool out in favor of inferior silicated coolant.
