terrylange
Just picked up my 2001 DeVille DTS this afternoon with 78K on it, and cancelled my shakedown cruise to AZ this weekend as the list of problems and deficiencies grew to 18 separate items on the 40 mile drive home. Won't bore you with all the details, just reinforces the well known statement "you get what you pay for." Hopefully, with the help of members of this board who have assisted me with my '97 over the last few years, I can get some of these problems fixed without breaking the bank. Since I have neither an owner's manual or shop manual yet, I don't even have the basic info on where the fuse panels are located. I see one under the hood on the passenger's side, but don't have a "map" on what each of these fuses controls. The problems I would like to look at this weekend, which I hope may be "fuse" related, are (1) cruise control doesn't engage. Light comes on in the steering wheel switch when the cruise is turned on, but when you hit the "set" button, nothing happens. (2) There is no readout on the digital part of the factory bose stereo. No clock, no indicator of station or band, volume, etc., just a blank screen. The radio works, I just have no idea what station I am listening to. Hopefully another fuse issue. Pulled 12 Hx codes out of the car (only 3 when I test drove it last week.) The only current one is PCM P0418, although the "service engine soon" light went out when I cleared it. The seller also had new tires put on, and now I am getting "check tire pressure" DIC messages with bizzare tire pressure readings attached. What should I be doing to follow up on this (assuming the tire shop didn't put 16 lb in one tire and 44 in another, as the DIC indicates.) Thanks for any assistance. JimD
There is another fuse/relay panel under the rear seat cushion. There is a 15 A fuse labeled STOP LP in the rear fuse panel that might be worth checking as you work the cruise problem. Also check brake pedal switches not adjusted properly or acting up someway. Remove the bottom trim panel to access the brake pedal arm and you will see two switches attached to a bracket. The bottom switch is for cruise and brake lamp. The switches are mounted to the bracket with a twist-lock mechanism and the switch plunger should extend approximately 1/8" from the switch barrel. Check your tire pressure with a known accurate pressure guage. Use the procedure in the attached file to reset the TPM system. FYI, there should be aluminum valve caps on those wheels. The valve cap is part of the antenna for the individual tire pressure monitor transmitters. Your cruise and TPM systems will set DTCs. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! JimD
Correction on the timer. Make that one minute between wheels and 5 minutes total. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE !
JIMDTS
Good points JimD I have the tpm system on the 01 dts I took off the aluminum valve caps on mine and put the plain old black plastic ones on Mine work fine without the aluminum caps. The aluminum caps have a small o ring type seal in them which seals the cap to the stem & acts as a moisture trap.. I air up my tires every couple weeks and I have had shrader valve problems the shrader gets corrosion on it when you go to air the tire put the air chuck on it push the shrader in and it sticks in and instant flat I have had this happen twice and it's a *smurf* to get it out to the closed position. The black plastic caps cured the problem they don't seal as well as the aluminum caps. Plus Now I carry a extra set of shrader valves and a tool to R/R the scrader valve. My wife has a 05 deville and I noticed on hers it is starting to get corrosion on the shrader valves so i put black plastic caps on the 05. On both cars the TPM system works fine without the aluminum caps.. Jim PS Trust me put an extra set of shrader valves and a removal tool in your trunk..One Day it may come in handy..I used it 2 times already..Now that I switched to the plastic caps so far so good.No corrosion. I talked to the mechanics at the dealer and they mentioned they see quite a few with a lot of corrosion on the shraders. One time I had cadillac road side asstance come out and change a wheel and tire for this issue.(flat tire) Now when I get my air gauge out to air the tires the little pouch I have with the shraders and tool is near by.. Good Luck Jim
JimD
The valves are supposed to be nickel-plated. Are you using this type of valve? Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE !
JIMDTS
Hi Jim I have used both Nickel plated and the plain brass and they both do the same thing corrosion. Plus that's what I thought They should be nickel.I went into the dealer bitching about this issue when it first happened and mentioned to the Service mgr. that some Jack A-- put brass shrader valves in on a couple wheels Well I did dig a little deeper. I walked over to the parts dept. and the parts guy pulled 4 or 5 complete sets of TPM valves they come complete with the transmitters valve stems etc.. ready to bolt up on the wheel And guess what some of them do come with brass shraders these were brand new rite out of the box some had nickel plated some brass. I put all nickel one time another time I switched to all brass made no difference as far as corrosion.. So I was happy it was not the dealer The parts guy told me to go over to the area by the tire rack and grab a couple sets of extra shrader valves. So I took 4 nickel shraders and 4 plain brass & on my way home stopped at a Nappa auto parts and purchased a screwdriver type tool to R/R the shraders. When the shrader valve sticks in it never happens when you are at a gas station that has a garage it happened to me at a gas station that just sold gas and had a BS air station No tools with me and they had none Lucky a woman who was fueling up had a hair pin so I could get the shrader closed otherwise I was ready to put the doughnut on.. I can't begin to tell you how Pissed off I was when this first happened.. Trust me get a couple shrader valves and a tool just in case It is no fun driving on a doughnut I have done it already due to the sticking shrader..The wheels and tires on my car are less than a year old they were replaced due to theft so it does not take long for corrosion to happen For what it's worth all the mechanics at the dealer also removed the aluminum caps on there cars they see many sticking schraders..due to the aluminum caps..The aluminum caps look much better than the black plastic one but on both of mine the aluminum caps are in the console of the car... What causes me to air my tires is that F'ing TPM is a toy I play with it too much this time of year with the tempeture swings 75 80f one day few days later 45f the tire pressure changes I like 30 cold so I mess with the air pressure and try to keep them at 30 cold Now I don't fool with them as much I always remember when those shraders stuck in so unless I'm setting off a low tire pressure warning it;s fine by me..
