Wheel Interchangability

Subject: Wheel Interchangeability

1994 SLS

I rotated my wheels yesterday. One Jack, about 20 minutes.

I looked at the skinny spare on the car. There is no way I want to drive winding, high speed, black top roads on that. A regular wheel and tire will fit into the wheel shape in the trunk. What I need to do is drill a hole and create a different mount so I can secure a full sized wheel in the trunk.

I will try to buy a spare steel wheel from a salvage yard.

Question: Does anyone know what other car wheels, (model, and years) are interchangeable? Same 16-inch wheels, same width, same offset, and same bolt spacing.

If memory serves me correctly, any GM large front drive car (Bonneville, Lesabre, Grand Prix), all have the same wheels. Same bolt pattern, same hub diameter, same offset. My stock SLS wheels, fit no problem on my sisters '95 Bonneville.

The temporary spare isn't designed for winding, high speed, black top roads, so I don't think anyone would want to do that. How deep is your spare tire well? Mine is just deep enough for the 4" wide tempo spare. Anything larger would not fit...or at least it would protrude up into the trunk.

Don,

Thank you, I very much appreciate the information.

Jason,

Like your car the dept is 4 inches. A regular wheel will cut down on my trunk space. I will have to modify the spare cover. I really do not use the trunk a lot. The actual amount of space reduction is little.

Usually when I travel, I look for black top roads that parallel major highways. Adds fun and time to a trip.

The other big plus is that in a rear end collisions, the full sized spare adds a lot of protection.

I don't buy that at all....if it were true, all cars would have a full sized spare.

The only GM Wheels that do not fit are Cavalier/Sunfire/Alero/Grand Am. Everything else is fair game. We are currently running 16" Chrysler LHS (same as Intrepid/Concorde) wheels on our 91 Fleetwood, the offset has the wheels sitting just the littlest bit out of the wheel well but it sure makes the car look, I would say anywhere between 33%-76% better laugh.gif . Good luck.
