diRtY
Hi guys i have a problem with my 94 sts. my car used to have oil leaks so i took it to get repaired. The mechanic took the engine out of the car to change the oil pan gasket and some others. Now the problem is that if i start the engine it runs well and everything is fine but the problem is that if i turn it off it won´t start again until it cools down! meanwhile the code P041 (E041) ................... No Cam Reference Signal from Ignition Control Module appears. and the other day while the engine was on i erased the codes and the engine suddendly stopped. could it be a sensor or the pcm? a harness?? i hope somebody can help me! thnx in advance
Scotty
Explain "won't start" a little more. Does it turn over at all? I would check all connnections to make sure they are connected, removing the engine is a HUGE project and its possible that something was left disconnected or it came loose if the plastic tab broke off. Check your CAM sensor connection and all connections near the coils if I am not mistaken the ignition control module is under the coils. Recheck all connection.. Someone else recently had the exact same problem and was going nuts with it (also a 94, engine was also removed) For the hell of it review this thread http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=6910&st=
jackc
Here is the diagnostic tree for a p041 on a 1993. 1994 should be the same. Looks like it may take some ciphering to figure out what's causing the code. Agree with Scotty that we need more info on "won't start."
epricedright
If it doesn't turn over, you might have a bad starter or bad ground on your starter...check the connections on your starter and especially the ground connection from the starter to your frame. Make sure the ground connection is clean and tight. My starter wouldn't start when it got hot on my last vacation...700 miles from home, only on a cold start would it turn over. Turned out to be a bad starter. I replaced it, and haven't had the problem since. I've had 2 starters go out in the last year...luckily the 2nd one was under warranty by AZ. The problem seems to be the starter is too close to the exhaust manifold...that's my take on it anyhow. Your problem could be simply a bad connection given the engine was just taken out. I would say the problem with your starter was that it was from Autozone (or any chain store)...most chain store rebuilders replace the parts that are shot in a starter - other parts can be close to failing but still ok and the starter is sold to someone else only to have some other marginal part fail.... The original starter on my '86 Park Avenue went 16 years and 166,000+ miles when it failed. I did not want to buy a remanufactured starter from Autozone as their lifetime parts are notorious for failing over and over. I bought a starter from NAPA that had a 3 year warranty. It lasted 13 months before it failed and NAPA replaced it free of charge although the towing bill cost me $25. The replacement lasted 2 years and failed...that time, NAPA wouldn't stand behind the starter as the warranty was expired...apparently, the three year warranty did not start over when the starter was replaced under warranty... I took the starter to an AC Delco rebuilder and he tested it and said the solenoid was bad. They disassembled the starter, checked everything, cleaned it up, and reassembled it all for $20. I will NEVER buy a remanufactured starter or alternator from a chain store again. MAC
Tell me about it. I bought several remanufactured alternators from PepBoys and they all failed within months. In fact, when I brought one of them back the parts manager tested two right off the shelf and both were defective. I bought an aftermarket turn signal assembly made by Napa at PepBoys and it was designed incorrectly so brought it back. I figured that since it was defective that they would not try to resell it--Wrong.

jhall
diRtY, Check the plugs that connect to the ignition pack and make sure they're clean. If the connection is bad, one or more coils would not get the "fire" signal from the control module. Alos, confirm the ground wire from the coil pack to the engine is in place. It should be a wire about the size of a #2 pencil and bolts to the engine at the passenger side. Keep us posted!
