Power Mirrors: Broken or just a bad connection?

Recommended Posts

This may have gone unnoticed for a long time, until my Mom drove the STS recently, and thus re-adjusted everything to her liking.

The power rear-view mirrors on either side of the car, I discovered, only operate to the left, but are dead when they are requested to angle 'right'. The up and down motion is fine however.

Being that the "horizontal motion" motor obviously works in both mirrors to power them to the left (as in pushing the left arrow on the interior control), I would suspect a bad electrical contact on the mirror control's 'right side' connection.

When I get a little time to poke around at it, I'll pull out the little panel and see how easilly the switch can be cleaned/ fixed.

I'm a little stupid when t comes to electricity, so maybe someone could support or disprove my little theory! sad.gif Could the electrical switch be repaired possilbly, or when they go, they go for good?

Thanks for some insight!

It is almost certainly the switch on the driver's armrest. Several here have been through this before.

I don't think you'll have much luck repairing the switch, but good luck.

From what you describe, it's probably either a faulty switch or faulty wiring. I would bet on the switch. I replaced my mirror control switch a year or so ago. If I remember correctly, the switch was about $35 from the dealer. Changing it out is a snap. If you can't make the repair right away, you can manually adjust the mirrors.

Poobah,

I went to te dealer this afternoon, to inquire about the switch. The dim-wit behind the counter took forever to find the part in the computer, and then hit me with an $80 quote for it! dry.gif Even with CDN exchange that is a little far fetched.

When I go to school tomorrow, I'll check at the Detroit Caddy dealer. Talk about price gouging or what!

NO, NO, NO . . . . . . *NOT* the dealership. ohmy.gif

Check:

or similar sites.

Probably about half price + 10% + S/H.

If I recall correctly, mine was about $41US with shipping and handling included. Got it in 4 business days.

$80 seems out of line (not sure of the exchange rate). I bought two or three small parts at that time and I could be off on the price - but not that far off. Try the discount parts houses Warren J suggested. I think a switch like that would be hard to fix, better to replace it.

Good luck.

BTW Does anyone know how manufacturers arrive at their service parts prices. They seem to be all over the place with very little relationship to the complexity of the part. blink.gif

Aloha STS,

I always spray electrical contact cleaner on switches and connections before I repllace electrical things. Life is very humid over here and cleaning the contacts usualy fixes things. I think that CRC makes a good spray!

God bless Ed

The switch on my 97 Eldo looks exactly like the switch did on my 90 olds cuttlas. The switches sits in a position that rain water drips on the switch when the window is open a bit thus slowly runing the switch. I haven't had to replace the switch on the Eldo but did on lthe Olds, fairly easy as I recall. Might be worth your while to see if the parts are interchangable and if there is any difference in price. Never know, might be the same and the Caddy part might cost more.
