davedog
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and help. I decided it simply was not worth the trouble of leaving the tint on. Like Bill K said: So maby you will be able to beat the tint law and not have to remove it. If you win it will probably be the first of many encounters with the cops. The next officer isnt going to know you won and can keep the tint so hes going to ticket you again. Its like driving around with a sign that says "Stop Me". Good luck.... So last night I spent all evening after work pulling the stuff off. I tried a few methods suggested, but the BEST was this: I took a hairdryer on HIGH and held it hear the tint on the inside, then I had my father-in-law hold a heat gun on the outside. Wearing gloves to protect my hands from the heat, the stuff peeled right off, no chemicals needed or anything! And no glue left on the windows!!! Of course my tint had only been on for 1 1/2 years , so it may not come off with that method that easy for everyone. I'll try to post some pics I took of the process soon. It made me sick to see the $200 tint job laying crumpled up on the floor though! I hope the state of GA is happy! -dave Crystal Red Tintcoat Exterior | Shale/Brownstone Interior | 32k
Regis
Nice that the tint came off slick as rick. That was a neat idea. At least you won't have to update the car pic you have at the bottom of your posts. I'm not crazy about tint but I'll admit it looks sharp on some cars depending on the body color and trim. You know Dave when I was younger I used to view the police as oppressors. Now that I'm older and living a much more law abiding lifestyle I don't have the same view I once had. I tend to give them a head nod now and then when I make eye contact and they reciprocate. I appreciate them. With that said, can you imagine being an officer and making a traffic stop with a car that is tinted? How about making that stop at night? Talk about a dissadvantage and the fear that must go through them in that situation. I can see the human value in banning the tint. Just my opinion. On a lighter note, I think your eldo looks great without the tint. I do see the advantages for the officers as far as safty goes, and I don't hold anything agaist the officer that pulled me over, he was just doing his job. The thing that angered me though was the fact that I did the research on % of tint I could have, and then the state decides to change it. Oh well, lesson learned, I for sure will not be putting another $200 into the new limit of 32% to have them change the law again. -dave Crystal Red Tintcoat Exterior | Shale/Brownstone Interior | 32k

parrothead
I missed the beginning of this thead. I have 82% tint on my windows and it is illegal on Ohio. I got stopped by my local police and received a warning. I went to my doctor and got a diagonosis of pre-cataracts. He wrote on a perscription slip "ok for tinted windows pre-cataract" I later got stopped by a state trooper and when he mentioned the windows I gave him the note and he sais "oh ok" nothing more. The story about the doctor is a bit funnier. He told me to say ouch when he shined his flashlight in my eyes, I said "ouch" and got my note. Basically I don't think they want to bother with the windows if you have a doctors note. here's alink to my Tint ~for every vision there is an equal and opposite revision~

an01sts
I'm certainly not a lawyer, but I was a glass man and a tint man, so I do have a fair working knowledge on light transmission through glass. I was going to mention that there is a guage that measures the percentage, but I thought I would scroll back and find your post. The guage the police used falls into federal compliances. If it failed the 32%, it was a violation of federal laws, and state laws cannot supercede federal laws. The complaint you have is with the tint shop. They sold you an illeagle tint job that didn't comply with federal laws. (The laws are complcated, such as front windows back windows. And the level of darkness depends on what type of external mirrors are on the car. The point is moot--just pointing out the varying issues with tint and federal compliance.) I have no doubt that the officer was correct, and the tint was illeagle at the time it was installed. Most tint is illeagle according to federal standards. The thing is that, unlike local law enforcment, there isn't a federal agency riding around checking out whether or not federal code is enforced. Front windows that will pass federal code isn't that dark. In fact it's pretty hard to tell the windows are tinted. Factory glass has about 12 to 14%. Sometimes more, sometimes less. If you place 20%, leagle, film on 14% factory glass, you have 34%. That means the 20% film is definantly illeagle.

Actually, at the time I had the tint installed there were no laws governing tint, on may 2nd, 2005 that GA changed that, so the tint shop was not doing anything illigal.
