whitefox
Is there anyway to override this extremely annoying limiter? safety isnt a concern as i will be driving with the proper speed rated tires shortly but theres no sense in paying for something i cant get the most out of. Any help on this would be appreciated.
Bruce Nunnally
With a (expensive) GM Tech II tool, theoretically you can apply the calibration (program) from same-year STS with high speed tires, but since the SLS and STS have different final drive ratio's, that may present other problems. Generally the dealer won't help due to liability issues. prior to 96 one could chip it, but in 96 OBDII came and the PCM has to be reprogrammed. Ranger
Very unlikely. It can only be done by the dealer, unless you know someone with a $3300 Tech II. Even then, they assume great liability and in the litigious society we live in I doubt you'll find anyone foolish enough to accept it. The trial lawyers are probably salivating just reading this. chevyorange
I'm going to leach on here with a question about my '94 STS. I checked the door and it came with Z-rated tires - is that a guarantee that I have the "full" 150 top end?
Ranger
I am pretty sure it is.
chevyorange
I did get the car up to 135 (with head gasket leak small crack in the head before knowing of course) and it was still pulling over in Eastern WA where there is a "chosen land" of area with clear, flat, straight highway and with good sight lines and I haven't seen a Stater in 30 years of driving to and fro (I'm 32 and even watched as a kid). I think after my new engine is broken in, with the new warranty, I'm going to go for a few more MPH. Adam
JasonA
I think all STSes up to 1994 or 1995 had 150 mph speed limiters, and all had Z-rated tires as part of the STS package. Because of ride complaint issues, Cadillac made H-rated tires standard in 1995 or 1996 (forgot the year), with Z-rated tires optional. I think that persisted well into the 1998 generation cars, but I'm not sure. S-rated tires, with 112 mph speed limiters, were always standard (and the only package available) on SLSes. Ranger
I believe the '02 I just bought has "S" rated tires on it.
