dsmac
Eitehr I have a fuel guage that doesn't register properly, or My Cadilac thinks it is out of gas when my fuel gauge thinks there is still fuel in the tank. Either way, I have a problem. How can I verify the problem I have? Currently, I track my miles and fill up every 300 miles. I've missed the mark twice and run out of fuel with the fuel gauge registering at least a 1/4 tank. Could the fuel gauge be reading properly but the mechanism feeding fuel to the engine have something wrong?
KHE
I would say that the sending unit is damaged - you will need to drop the tank to access the sending unit. The worst part of that job is removing the rubber filler hose from the tank. Bruce Nunnally
Probably the sending unit in the fuel tank, which sends the fuel level to the gauges. If it malfunctions, you can be out of fuel but it still claims there is some. My 96 STS had this issue, and would run out of gas with the gauge on 1/8. If you KNOW there is gas in the tank but you run out of gas, perhaps the fuel pump is not picking up from the bottom of tank. 67coupedeville
We learned the hard way on our 91 Fleetwood like that. It said 12 litres and apparently, no it did not. We just figured out that when it says 20 litres, it is getting close to empty. Spence
canadian95sts
One thing I've noticed in my 96 is that my gas guage doesnt really move much while driving, but if i get home with the needle just above half, next time I start the car it will go down just below half, it annoys the hell out of me. Does anyone else have the same issue, is it a sign that something in the fuel system is on its way out, or is it normal??? 67coupedeville
Yea the fuel guage will rarely move on our Fleetwood. It will say 24 litres, then I get home and shut the car off, go out again and it is at 17 litres. Keeps me on my heels . Spence

Matt On start-up (in the morning) mine always reads 1/4 more than actual after 5 miles drops to proper reading......we both probably have sending units going out, I don't feel like dropping the tank what about you
CaddyChris
if you are tracking miles...I would definatley lower that number by at least 50 to 250 miles. I rarely ever get 300 miles out of a 20 gallon tank. Chris Christopher Petro 94 sts 67 coupe de Ville
