PS fluid comming from my steering wheel

95Eldog

Recommended Posts

First I would like to say that I have been using this board to fix my 95 Eldo for some time now. I'm VERY thankful for it's presence.

In the past I have had FPR problems that I had know idea how to solve untill reading past posts from this baord.

I have had electrical problems that were resolved using this board.

I have had that strang noise that no one knows where it's comming from (alternator; power steeering pump; tension pully; A/C) area, but once again the board has helped me isolate the problem.

This time, I have changed my power steering pressure hose, after thinking I could just cut the old one and clamp a new one on (yeh right), and everything was looking fine up untill I replaced the PS fluid.

One bottle, two bottles, five bottles??? Where is this stuff going? seven bottles, O.K., something is wrong. I got the car on ramps, looking at my connections, no leaks. Where is it going? Nothing is leaking on the ground. Was about to back off ramp and discovered PS fluid dripping out from under the steering colum boot inside the car.

I recal an older post that I can't find, that mentioned something about re-setting some box on the rack. Could this be the problem?

Please help...

There is no P/S fluid in the column. I'm baffled.

I hope you did not cut and clamp a new P/S hose on it. That hose is high pressure. Clamps will not hold. It will blow off as soon as to turn the wheel. It cannot be repaired. It must be replaced with the fittings crimped in place.

You're J/K, right?

Since it's not April Fool's day, I'm gonna take you somewhat seriously. The system capacity is 0.9 liters (about 1 quart).

I'm gonna guess you're using VERY LITTLE bottles.

Where is it going? I would check the battery, fuel tank, vacuum canister, glove box and your left hip pocket in that order.

The steering column leak was a nice touch, though.

Warren

It baffels me too!

The hose is new. I did attempt to cut and clamp the old hose because it was leaking from one of the rubber-to-metal connection, but as I now know, it can't be done. The new hose was ordered from a local parts store and appears to be connected right.

I put 12oz bottles in, and it's not running out on the ground.

I was getting in the car when I noticed the floor was wet. Looked under the dash and the fluid was leaking from the top of the rubber boot on the steering column where the column pertrudes through the floor. I put seven bottles in the resouvier and only about a half bottle (6oz) or more leaked on the floor.

I have no power steering persently. Lots of whinning when turning Left or Right. The steering kicks in and out when turning. No noise any other time.

And just to make sure I'm not crazy, I just went back and cheked the car again but I don't see any leaks (seven bottles worth) on the ground. There is fluid present on the outside of the CV boot. It appears to be comming from the rack, but its very little fluid. The resevour is empty.

At one point, about the fifth bottle, I took the return hose off and put an empty bottle on the end of the hose too see if the fluid was returning to the resouiver and it was.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the rack.

Any suggestions???

My only guess....

Is the fluid is getting past the steering rack spool valve. Major leak. The spool valve is where the intermediate shaft connects to the steering rack.

Maybe snap ring failure.....

What was the original failure mode?

Ok...just looked at the service manual....zero info on fixing a spool valve. I guess just replace the rack at GM?

Um... some may remember the 'morning sickness' some GM steering racks had in the eighties....spool valve wear issues were the problem. There is fluid preseure in that area.

Sounds like this system had some issues.....

Sounds like a bad steering rack....leaking badly at the spool valve. Filling the boot above....

Never heard of this issue...

AND I"M GONNA GUESS you will have some difficulty explaining power steering fluid leaking out of the steering column inside the car . . . . ?!?

Nu?

The spool valve on the rack is leaking.

When he put 7-8 bottles of fluid in.....it all leaked at the spool valve......the fluid filled up the 'air tight' plastic sleeve that passes thru the fire wall for the intermediate shaft to connect to the rack.

He put so much in at one time....the plastic sleeve filled up and overflowed into the car.

In one post he even mentions he can see the plastic sleeve filled with fluid.

The complete joke as my father once told to a buddy of his

(at least 30 years ago):

Buddy: Check out my new Charger, its got a Hemi!

Dad: Nice car, but my Chevy's got a Henway!

Buddy: Uh, what's a Henway?

Dad: About 2 pounds, if you need more buy a turkey!

Thanks Guys,

I think it's time for a new rac. It's not going to be cheep as I have researched prices from $700-$900.

I know it's not a quick fix, but I wish someone would just say "all you need to do is jack the front end up and remove the two screws and it's fixed".

Would it be wise to shop around the local junk yards for one, or would I need to buy new?

Thanks again

What is your part's source? A remanufactured rack should be in the $150 range. You could also replace the bad seal on your existing rack for a lot less.

Ditto what Kevin said, buy a remanufactured rack.

Rockauto has an AC DELCO reman for $174, an A1 CARDONE for $149 w/o EVO component, and $198 with EVO component. What is EVO?

Where the H did you research? laugh.giflaugh.gif I even checked the ETC and there is no difference in price.... blink.gif

When i had to replace the rack in my 95 STS, it was cheaper than it was to replace the third brakelight, I paid around $160.00 for a remanufactured part, never had any problems with it, 700 - 900 is waaaaaaaaaaay to much.
