What is this?

Ever since i was rearended in April, and the car was repaired, the right muffler, has been banging against something. I finally went out this morning, to have a look see. This is for a 2002 Seville SLS. Just above the right muffler, there is a black box, with a heat shield bonded to it. There are electrical connections leading from it, to where i do not know. Anyway, that is what the muffler is banging against. There is about 1/16th to 1/8th inch clearance there, and I am considering installing a heavy rubber sheet between the two parts. This in effect will have the two parts always in contact with each other (with the rubber between) so they cannot contact each other, causing the banging. But, I do not know what is inside that black box, and if this will cause a problem. Can anyone assist? Thanks

Air compressr module for the rear shocks. My undamaged installation has approx. 1/2" clearance between the top of the muffler and the heat shield on the compressor.

Have a muffler shop take a look at it. Maybe all you need is the correct rubber hanger for the rear of the muffler.

Why not take it to the shop that did the work, and submit a friendly request to straighten things out?

I think Bob posted some sound advice.

Jim thanks for putting a name to the description and pics. I always wondered what that was.

The pictures are from an earlier model. My '98 compressor module is quite different in appearance.

Ok that may be the case, that the compressor module changed, that photo that kger2 took however is the EVAP canister I believe from his 94, I think my 96 has the same thing, that is not what you have is it Jim?

The original post (Don) was describing an item located above the right muffler on a 2002 Seville (K platform). I stuck my head under the right rear side of my K platform Seville to see what I could see.

I would expect the evap canister to be on the left side of the vehicle since all the fuel plumbing is left of center (K platform).

Yes that is where it is, the photo that kger2 provided is in fact the EVAP canister on the left side of the car near the tank, different than the photos Dadillac posted..

It is hard to tell from the picture but is it possible that it is nothing more than the way the floor pan is molded for something under the rear seat and since it had to come close to the muffler, they put a heat shield on it.

It looks like they reattached the muffler slightly crooked. If it is crooked and you don't want to have it straightened then you could either install bigger rubber hangers or bend the muffler hanger mount for a quick fix. As is it looks like just the right edge or corner is contacting the "black box".

Well I got an idea this morning, and I gathered up what i needed. I bought small pieces of cork board, about 3/16" thick, and exhaust pipe repair tape. I chose cork, because engine gaskets, used to be made from the stuff. Cork will be relatively unaffected by the heat. I used the exhaust repair tape, to layer one side of the cork, and placed (wedged) it, exhaust tape side down, between the muffler, and the box. In the chance that this repair should fall out, it is so lightweight, that it will not damage anything. Also, I have enough to make a second one, just in case it should fall out. I am expecting it to not though, as it is in there very snug. Total cost was less than $9.00, and a whole lot easier, than trying to get everything lined up in the correct fashion. It is a band aid, but a band aid that i can live with, as noone will ever know it is there. Except you's guys.

I got curious and checked my daughters '99. What you are looking at is the housing for the ELC compressor.

Thanks Ranger. But, what does ELC stand for? Is that the shock compressor? If it is, I thought that the compressor was in the center of the car, not outboard.

:lol::lol:

Rube Goldberg was an "inventor", (author and cartoonist, actually) that starting in the 1930's came up with some of the craziest contraptions the world has ever seen..Ergo the "Rube Goldberg Award".
