ted tcb
I hope this isn't an old topic ... my search turned up nothing. My rearview mirror always stays in the bright, daytime mode ... on the highway tonight, I noticed it doesn't dim when someone comes up behind me. The compass works, and the autodim light is on. Could the recessed photocell in the mirror be dirty enough to affect the dimming? No, I don't have a tinted rear window. I much prefer the unit on my 89 Fleetwood ... it had a distance setting. Ranger
Along with the sensor that detects headlights behind you, there is also a sensor on the backside of the mirror that detects daylight or lack there off. Either of those sensors may be bad.
OynxSTS
Or blocked by a parking lot tag! Not that this happend to me or anything... CaddyChris
to see if it works, in the DAY time put your fingers over the sensor in the back of the mirror to make it think its dark, it should dim right away Chris Christopher Petro 94 sts 67 coupe de Ville
OynxSTS
CORRECT! If it helps the back side is not the part that points towards the back of the car... The back of the mirror is the black plastic side!!! ted tcb
FIXED IT! I tried cleaning with a Q tip, and this may have helped, not really sure. While I was in behind the mirror, I removed the power supply, and reattached it ... voila, the mirror changes brightness as it should. OynxSTS
Congrates! I love that "I fixed it for FREE feeling" its almost as good as "I fixed it for 1/10 of what the dealer was asking" My bet probably a dirty or loose connector... rek
"My bet probably a dirty or loose connector... " I've found a CURE! I got it at "Parts Express". Made by Caig, called Deoxit. I use the 100% (small bottle/built in brush) as a dressing for any connector that I take apart/clean. It really WORKS. I also got some Deoxit D5 (Spray Contact Cleaner). IMO, it is the BEST, especially for noisy/dirty controls (Audio, speaker selector switch, Balance...). It cleans most any electrical switch/control/connector. You may find it (Spray) at Radio Shack. rek
