Crank Sensor A and B

Men and Women of Caddyinfo.

I recently developed a "Check Engine Soon" light; also the car cut off once yesterday. So I took the vehicle to my medchanic and they said they got a code of crank sensor "A" problem but, they contest that it is working properly.

I haven't seen the "Check Engine" light since but the car cut off on me a few hours ago.

Should I have my mechanic replace the crank sensor?

The other thing I would like to know from the members of this board is how much time does it take for your engine to get up to temp.

My caddy could be sitting for exactly 12 hours and takes about 120 seconds or so to get up to operating temp. After I start it up to leave work. Is this normal?

Thanks everyone

On an '01 definately, Cranky sensors are a known issue for '01 North and Short stars... Of course you can do it yourself... Its not all that hard

Time to warm up depends on:

Idle vs driving

Temperature out side

City vs Highway driving

Etc..

I have noticed though that my N* seems to warm up really fast.

For me average would be way less than 5 minutes of city driving.

If I actually timed it it is probably less than 2-3 minutes

Thanks for the reply OnyxSTS. I have a warranty with my car till March '06 so I will have the shop do it.

I thought is was bit unusual for my vehicle to warm up that fast. The needle never goes over the middle mark and if it does (very hot and humid days) if comes right back.

Thanks again.

Good point on "both" if the dealer balks... Point out to him/her there is a factory TSB on this...

Good Luck!

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin

Here is the one for '00s

I'm still looking for the one for '01s

============================================

Document ID# 668342

2000 Cadillac Seville

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Product Emission 99085 - Crankshaft Position Sensor Failures #99085 - (01/26/2000)

99085 -- Crankshaft Position Sensor Failures

Certain 2000 Cadillac Eldorado and Seville

General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Campaign involving certain 2000 Cadillac Eldorado and Seville model vehicles equipped with 4.6L (RPO LD8-VIN Code Y or RPO L37-VIN Code 9) engine. The crankshaft position sensors in these vehicles may fail and cause an intermittent engine chuggle, stall or possible long starting crank time and/or a no start condition, as well as illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). These conditions may be caused by a cracked solder joint at a resistor in the sensors.

To correct this condition, dealers are to replace both crankshaft position sensors.

Vehicles Involved

Involved are certain 2000 Cadillac Eldorado and Seville model vehicles equipped with 4.6L (RPO LD8-VIN Code Y or RPO L37-VIN Code 9) and built within the following VIN breakpoints:

2000 Cadillac Eldorado Vin Code YU101752 thru YU177716

2000 Cadillac Seville Vin Code YU102055 thru YU190443

( The Vin Code is the last 8 digits of your vin)

Important

Dealers should confirm vehicle eligibility through VISS (Vehicle Information Service System) prior to beginning campaign repairs. [Not all vehicles within the above breakpoints may be involved]

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number. Computer listings containing the complete Vehicle Identification Number, customer name and address data have been prepared, and are being furnished to involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. The customer name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with customers involved in this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin has no involved vehicles currently assigned.

These dealer listings may contain customer names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign.

Customer Notification

Customers will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by General Motors (see copy of typical customer letter included with this bulletin - actual divisional letter may vary slightly).

In order to ensure full protection under the emission warranty, and the right to participate in future recalls, the customer notification letter recommends that customers have their vehicles serviced as soon as possible. It also advises that failure to do so could legally be determined to be lack of proper maintenance. The vehicle may fail a state or local emission inspection test if the recall work is not completed.

Dealer Campaign Responsibility

All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this campaign MUST be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this campaign bulletin BEFORE customers take possession of these vehicles.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. This could be done by mailing to such customers a copy of the customer letter accompanying this bulletin. Campaign follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.

In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, please take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

When a California emissions campaign is completed by a GM dealer, the dealer must provide the vehicle owner a "Proof Of Correction Certificate" which the owner may need to present to the California Department Of Motor Vehicles (DMV) when renewing their vehicle registration. Without this correction certificate, the owner may be unable to renew their vehicle registration

Unfortunately this list is only a tease... To get the details you have to pay the all data guys $30 bucks...

My guess your problem is covered under the cranks no start TSB

Some members on this board have "free" access to this detail and will post the details, if asked nicely. :)
