ted tcb
I had a friend change my coolant at his rad shop today ... he's been doing it for 30 years, and just specializes in cooling and ac business. I was just going to drain and refill myself, but I noticed my coolant was the green stuff on my new 99 STS ... good news in that the coolant has been changed previously, but the tablets may not have been added. Plus, I might have mixed the two coolants together. He powerflushed the old coolant away, then ran the engine at a steady idle for about 30 minutes before the coolant started to bubble and the fans came on. He crushed the tablets and added them to the upper hose ... something to do with the thermostat location .... hope thats okay. He continued to run the engine and add Dexcool and distilled water .... took about an hour for everthing. A plus is that my surge tank no longer has brown crud up the side. Unlike the dealership, its nice to be welcomed and shown how the job is correctly done, standing beside your car. Its amazing to see how efficient the cooling system is on these cars ... it takes a long time to get them up to 230f under pressure. Then you see the fans come on, the bubbling subsides, and the temp lowers. 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl
Ranger
Keep in mind, that once you have had green silicated coolant in the engine you are now relegated to 2 yr. changes. You can no longer take advantage of the longer Dex-Cool periods even though you are using Dex.
Oldgamer
230 under pressure isn't so low anyway. I never got that. May be you got this because of idle. The best cooling sistem not only keeps temperature stable, but allows to engine to reach work temperature as fast as possible too.
ted tcb
It got to 230f after at least 30 minutes of revving the throttle cable, getting the thermostat to open, and allowing the engine to take the proper capacity of coolant mix. Thanks for the tip on 2 year changes ... not such a bad idea on aluminum engines. 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl
