The 1996 Seville had a service bulletin to add a washer to the positive post because the post bolt was too long for the battery. Perhaps there was a washer in your 97 setup that has gone astray along the way?

My 96 has a washer and a lead spacer or lug between the positive cables. I have heard that over time and with over tightening the soft lead compacts and lessens the pressure on the cables. I am hoping to replace my positive cables soon along with the lug.

i dont hae a washer the lug is still there cadillac will sell me a new lug but i think a spacer or washer is all i really need

new cables have been redisigned to fix this problem they are about 120 dollars and you might need another 68 dollar cable for your starter as a last resort i can make a washer out of a metal elec box by knocking out a slug and drilling a hole and grinding it to fit

How about shortening the bolt about an 1/8 of an inch? It will pull out of the connector.

Its not necessary for the washer to be made out of lead, my washer appears to be brass any washer that will fit the bolt and snug up the cable will do the job. You are just trying to take up the looseness, as someone else said, cutting the bolt would even work, but a washer is the easiest solution.
