Ordering transmission

As everybody knows, changing of $5 part can lead to major rebuild, no matter this is a head gasket or transmission. Now I should to decide where to order transmission for my 94 STS. This is a hard decision, cause car is 11 years old with ~71K. I always thought about it as a reliable car :( . Reputable mechanic recommended to order from Jasper and gave me phone of other mechanic who can do that work (to replace). I made some research on line and have next options: Jasper Transmissions sell rebuild transmission for $2408 with 36month/75,000 warranty for parts and labor (don't know about shipping cost). Phoenix Remanufactured Transmissions sells for $1050 with 12month/12,000 warranty ($260 shipping).

What do you think my choice should be? Did somebody hear about quality of Phoenix transmissions?

Thanks for any advice.

At 71k miles the transmission is just getting broken in.

What is the problem with your transmission?

I can't speak to either of those 2 companies. But if you're looking for a 3rd to consider, there is another Phoenix Transmissions (no relation) located close to me in Weatherford Texas. They have both drive-in service and build-to-order. They'd be happy to build one for you and ship it to you. They are an exceptional company - the owner, Greg Ducato, is there every day working and controlling the quality of what they put out. I've bought from them and was 100% satisfied. They're very well-respected locally.

Here's a link to their website if you'd like to give 'em a call:

As long as you're having a rebuilt transaxle installed you might as well have a limited-slip differential installed as well. Both wheels will spin for better traction, acceleration, cornering, and tire wear.

I don't have a need for an LSD, but I am curious. Anyone have a source for the LSD? I'd consider adding it if ever I was unfortunate enough to need a tranny replacement.

I used to think that 4T80E transmission is a "bulletproof". My sister's 96 Chevrolet Corsica has 134K and has no problem with engine or transmission. That car costs part of my car. Of course, I can't even compare a ride comfort. But who says we paing for the ride only, and that expensive car should not be reliable?

growe3,

the car starts to slip after transmission got hot enough. I dropped a pan and changed solenoids just in case. Still same. Looks like low line pressure, cause pressure switch shows me code 111 (it will show it if pressure is too low on all gears), and when I make pressure higher overriding PS20 it start catching up. So it confirm that pressure line is too low.

Have you tried the GM parts counter? I know I went around to a couple transmission shops here in town and they said minimum $3000 (CDN) to rebuild mine. Well a brand new one with all the updates from GM is $3300, which do you think I am going to go with if I need one?

Have you tried gmotors, and there is another site someone should be able to throw down. They sell GM parts out of the "backdoor" over the internet for 20% over cost. Find out what your tansmission retails for at the GM dealer in your town, make sure you get the right tranny for your car (STS), and get the part number for that transmission. You can then take the retail cost of the tranny, cut it in half and add 20%, that is the price from gmotors. Just my $0.02.

67coupedeville,

I checked gmotors. Transmission cost $2074.94 plus $400 shipping.

Yesterday I remembered that maddog selled his car with broken transmission on e-Bay and decided to check what I can find up there. I found out that our cars cost cose to nothing after 10 years. I can buy 94 STS (usually with a bit higher milage than mine) around $3200. For ~$5500 I can buy even yonger car. At least I understand now that it's not worth it to buy transmission for $2400 with 3 years warranty. I rather buy transmission for $1000 and sell car then add couple grand and buy a bit better and newer car.

How many miles are on your car? If the mileage is low, consider the fact that you know that car and will get many more miles out of the car with a new trans.

If you decide to replace the trans., I would go with a GM Goodwrench trans. as they incorporate all the latest engineering changes that the factory units get.

If the car has high mileage, it might make sense to install a used trans. and sell the car though. My winter car, a 1986 Park Avenue has almost 201,000 on the 440-T4 trans... I have already decided that when the trans pukes, it will go to Buick heaven :D I am on the lookout for a '95 Sedan DeVille as a replacement...

...car is 11 years old with ~71K. ...

I did some shopping around and find that it will cost me around $2000. In one shop mechanic told me that he use Scotty's Transmission shop to rebuild transmission (Scotty's Transmission does work for local Cadillac dealer too). When I ask him if they can just remove and install transmission (in case if I order rebuild transmission on-line myself) he said it going to be around $650 labor. Than he make a point that it's better to give local mechanic (Scotty for example) rebuild than order on-line, because if something goes wrong who going to pay labor to remove it again. May be his right, I don't know.

One thing more: I went to Gibraltar Transmission to talk a bit more. While I was waiting for the menager I checked how one of mechanic works. He rinse the bottom pan in a water and just shake it a bit to dry. Then he install it to the transmission. With an air gun. That all wrong! When I installed it I marked numbers next to the bolts and used torque wrench. But I guess they all do the same. When I talked to manager? about simptoms and told him how I diagnosed he seems to me very competent, though.

I'm gonna take another day off at tuesday and see how Scotty Transmission mechanics work. Or I'm just too crazy? This Tuesday I gonna give my car to somebody already,,,

Its good you are being cautious, take your time! My local Caddy dealer, King O'Rourke, Smithtown, NY recommended St. James Transmissions, they did a great job on the tranny itself, but a crappy job on the R&R. They did not replace the oil cooler o-rings, left a bolt out of the bell housing, and poorly routed electrical wires and conduits.. They could not have taken it for a test drive as the brake rotor splash shield was smashed up against the rotor scraping when I drove it... I found out that the R&R is as important as the tranny rebuild. Take your time.. It cost me $1800 to rebuild mine..
