I think the problem is you "got the oil changed". Did you check the oil level after someone else changed it? Who knows where the oil level was after it was changed, unless you did it yourself. If this is the first time you've checked since it was changed, it may not have lost ANY oil...it may be right where it was when the filled it. In general, as long as the oil level reads anywhere on the dipstick, you have plenty of oil. It's not until the system is a full 2.5 quarts low (out of 7) when you'll see the CHECK OIL LEVEL message on the DIC.

jadcock,

Isn't that 2.5 out of 7.5?

I thought the requirement was a certain radius, at say 60 mph, for 30 seconds

on 5 qts. of oil, as opposed to 4.5 qts of oil.

Yeah, give or take. I always put in an even 7 quarts and I've always got oil on the 'stick.

Is that cold or hot? I never run mine above the ADD mark...checked COLD.

7 quarts with a new filter and add about 3/4 quart in 7000 miles - Havoline 10W-30

I have found ever since I started using Valvoline Extra Life(high milage) oil, I don't need to add as much oil.

I still ad about ½ a liter every 3000kms, where before it was 1½ liters.

It might be worth a shot.

I find it is. This is the same in my 4.9, and my 4.6

Ever since he-whose-name-cannot-be-mentioned wrote so authoratatively about the reliability of the Oil Life Monitor, I've stopped worrying.

Only once did "baby" nag me to CHECK OIL LEVEL between oil changes. After the pan bolts were snugged, that ended. WOTs also bumped me from 800 miles/qt. to about 1200 miles/qt.

The extra oil capacity is built in so you don't have to be concerned.

Don't worry, be happy.

I have a 1998 Cadilllac STS adn I burn a qaurt and half to two quarts every 1000 miles. Is there anything I can do. I do the WOT but no go.

I would get under the car and determine if you are leaking oil. Check the pan, the oil cooler lines, the oil filter, the oil filter adapter, the sending unit and the cam covers. Check to see if the pan bolts are snug, do not overtighten, you won't be able to reach all of the bolts. I would also check to see if you have a case half leak. How many miles do you have?
