It fixed itself

Well when it comes to cars and anything mechanical we are used to saying " It's not going to fix itself ". I would have looked for my old post about my power door locks but I have nothing to follow up the problem with. Thats right, now the rear driver side door power lock is working again, go figure. It would not open, only lock with the remote. The same problem happened to the passenger side rear door but it started working again in a few days. The fronts were and are still working fine. So the only question now is" how long before they act up again ". Now for an un related problem that has me nuts. I'm repairing my friends Dell Computer. His old HD shot craps. He bought a new WD 120 Gb HD. At first the set up utility could not find it, then it did. Now during the XP set up every few minuts it goes to black acreen saying Primary HD cant be found. I enter set up and exit out and it resumes the XP set up. This never happened before. I wish it would fix itself too. LAter guys....

That is of cource one of the first things I do. When I first booted up I went to it and noticed it had trouble finding the drive. Then it did and away I went into the rest of the job. That is when I found it going back and forth into black screen saying the primary drive could not be found. Later on last night I went back into CMOS and went to the secondary drive in CMOS and took it off of automatic recognition telling it (NONE) and then went back to my work on the machine. It did not go to black screen any more saying Primary drive can not be found. I was not working with the machine long enough though to see if it indeed is OK now. I will be able to tell more this evening. I'm hopeing there is not some other problem.. Thanks Bud for the help...

1. Check jumper position (master/slave) on a drive.

2. Cable usually has two connectors for HDs: one on the end of the cable and one close to the middle. Master HD should be connected to the end connector and slave (if it's exist on a middle connector) . Verify that.

How old it the dell? Some of the older BIOS were limited in the capictity drive you could use, 120GB may be too much....

Also, see if you have an extra drive that you KNOW works, I have seen brand-new drives bad out of the box many times.

You might want to put a new IDE cable in, a flacky cable can cause sorts of fun.

If all else fails, incuded what the other guys said, you may have a bad IDE channel on the motherboard. In that case, you could add a PCI RAID card, but I wouldn't trust a machine with a bad IDE channel much.

Hope this helps.

many of the newer dells use the "Cable Select" jumper position. If yours does (check your CDROM drives), then you must use this n the HD as well, some of the dell systems (optiPlex for example) are VERY picky about this.
