1993 Seville Trunk

My trunk motor won't pull the trunk down the rest of the way. I can close it manually, but the motor won't pull it down the rest of the way. Sometimes, while I am driving, it will close on its own. But, this doesn't happen very often.

Do you have any suggestions, or can I just disengage the motor and use the trunk without it?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Ed!

That did make sense, but I don't usually hear the motor running when I try to close the trunk. I think I have only heard it once or twice. What do you suggest if the motor isn't running?

Thanks for your help!

Brittbee,

Same trunk episode you described happened to me recently and my 93 Deville.

It's not the motor, it's the pulldown switch (not the official name) and it cost me less than $20 bucks at the local Caddy dealer and you can install yourself. GM part number for my car is GM 16629927 Switch Interruptor (use this if it helps you identify the part).

Took off plastic cover over pulldown motor, removed a screw and the prong connection. 10 minutes after tackling the job...mission accomplished.

There is a little T that needs to go between the pulldown mechanism...just ask the parts guy and he'll explain.

How could one convert the trunk to normal (non power) operation.

I have 3 Cadillacs with the pull down, all working fine, but just don't have a problem with slamming it the old style way; always slightly scared that on a rainy day or trip it will decide to stop pulling down.

Can you somehow pull it down while open and then unplug the unit? Just curious.

Gman,

I have the same fear as you. One random stormy day with torrential rains suddenly the pull down decides this is the day it goes on strike. I can only imagine. The first time I saw the motorized pull down in action I thought "cool!". The second time I saw it working I thought to myself, "What's the point?". If I'm not capable of closing the trunk lid the last inch and a half then should I really be driving on the road? I figure pushing the trunk closed that last tiny bit amounts to the same energy needed to open the side door or turn the steering wheel. It's another one of those things that makes one go hmmm.

I'd gladly trade in the power antenna and motorized trunk pull down for more useful and practical features like: compass, telescoping steering wheel, or more cigarette lighter outlets (the 94sts has 1 and my 90 Bonn sse had 3). Hard to look corporate with a honking 3-way splitter attached to the dash. :D

I've noted the fix as well. I'm certain it'll only be a matter of time but now I'm armed with the knowledge. Thanks guys. Cheers!

The power pulldown units are usually reliable. Most damage is caused by someone slamming the trunk lid. That usually damages the upper switch. If the upper switch checks out ok, the problem could be the lower switch (also fairly inexpensive). There is a very comprehensive trouble chart in the shop manual.

I have the same problem with my '92 seville. I pulled the black switch out, connected one wire to the positive lead on the motor and one to the negative and strung the wires out under the trunk lid and shut it while the wires were still connected to the motor. I then connected one of those wire leads to the negative side of a 12v tractor battery and touched the other to the positive. If it doesn't work, reverse the leads on the battery and it will operate the electric pull down enough to adjust it so that it will close and seal manually. If you go too far, just reverse the leads on the battery to the motor and it will operate the motor in reverse to adjust correctly. once I was done I just opened the trunk lid and pulled the wires off. It will do until I get a new switch. I don't mind closing the lid manually.

  • 2 years later...

The same thing just happened with my trunk this afternoon. And of course it's raining.....Murphy's Law. So after doing some searching it appears that I need this Pulldown Switch (GM part# 16629927 for years 92-99). There is power in the deck lid for it engages and releases just fine. The problem is that the actuator (lower) assembly won't pull the lid down and appears to be dead as a door nail. I'll call the dealer in the morning and hopefully they'll have one in stock. Anything else I should know regarding this particular switch? Like washers, clips, retainers, etc? Thanks.

Hahaa I just found out that this rain is changing over to 3" of snow tomorrow. It's times like this that I miss the old style "slam it shut" trunk lids. Not much to break on those things.

Maybe the trunk lids need to be like the new SRX I drove the other day...

Push the FOB button.... it opens all the way.... push it again.... it closes all the way.

Real neat.... till it malfunctions. :):):)

Well I popped the new switch in today and viola! It took about 10 minutes as someone else noted. Jim, I think the idea of power trunks and antennas are really cool for about a day, neat for a week, and no big deal after a month. Trunks are something that I grew up expecting to always work. A no-brainer. But in the big picture of this car it's a minor irritation considering how well it's performed over the years. I'll give credit where credit is due. If it weren't for caddyinfo.com, Bruce, and all the fine posts from members this little issue would have seemed a much larger deal then it turned out to be. And more expensive I'm sure. Thank you all.

I was putting an empty 20# propane into the trunk of my 93 Eldo and hit the trunk bracket real hard. Needless to say the trunk wouldn't close. It turned out to be the switch. I took the small rivets out of the switch, cleaned up the contacts, substituted screws for the removed revits and put the switch back in, followed by greasing the worm screw drive. That was about two years ago and it has been working fine ever since.

I supposed I could have bought a new switch, but this happened on a Sunday, and I was leaving for the airport the next morning.

I can see how that could've happened. The top front edge of the switch touches the trim piece. Hit it with something hard and..... yeah I can see it. Funny thing is that I thought about taking the old switch apart too. Not much to it and I figured there was just a little corrosion on an internal contact. But I had the new one in and I just didn't feel like farting around with it. It's still in the trash so if I get the gumption...... nah. Glad to hear it worked for you though.

Replacing the switch is pretty easy, as I (Scotty) noted above, it went bad on my 91.

That said, while we take a lot of these goodies for granted, I have been driving my cousin's Lexus, and because there is no Twilight Sentinel, I have been driving with NO headlights because they don't come on, and three times now, I have left the headlights ON and gone inside, thinking they would go OFF by themselves, WHICH THEY DON'T.. We do get used to our Cadillac features.
