The outer pad is retained by spring straps and the inner pad had guide surfaces that ride on the knuckle. Why don't you save yourself all sorts of trouble and just replace the pads? They're either right or wrong. Close don't count here, something is amiss. I'd go get a new set of pads, double/triple check the parts #'s and start over.
