I was driving home from the local beaches on sunday and noticed smoke coming from the cowel area, it also smelled like burning oil when i came to a stop. I stoped at the gas station and checked out where the smoke is coming from and it seems like its oil leaking on the exhast manifold causeing the smoke, i also checked the oil level and it was a little less then half a quart low. im thinking its the main seal that is leaking, i limped the DTS home at a steady speed of 50 and kept an eye on the gauges and the message center for a 'check oil level' . Well I did have the dealer install a new engine about 4 months ago when it pushed a rod, I called the dealer up and told them its leaking oil and told them I will bring it to them tuesday morning. now this should be coverd under the warrenty they gave me with the new engine right? 3 years/100,000 miles.

I would have to say-YES!

You can read the warranty policy to be 100%, but I would definately think so.

I would definitely have it checked out but I don't think a rear main seal would be leaking on your exhaust manifold.

I took it this morning to the dealer and was told it was the rear main seal leaking, car will be there for a couple of days,  its all covered under warrenty but no loaner car. thanks

That is ODD.... since this is a transverse engine oil would not leak on the manifolds or muffler pipes, it must be blowing back to the convertor and muffler pipes. This was a new engine wasn't it? How many miles on it? If I remember it was said that the rear seal was hearty and rarely leaked.

Did you offer or suggest that it was the rear seal? Maybe the convertor/seal was not properly lubricated when they did the swap.....and they did the swap dry and screwed the seal?

DTS-driver,

Something sounds odd.

If you got a new engine, the latest version of the rear seal is a tough-built unit that is hard to damage. The new seal lip does not even touch the crank since it has it's own rotating mating surface that is installed over the crank. Even the older seal design that is in direct contact with the crank was tough to damage, so it's surprising that a new engine has a leak in this location.

With respect to oil on the manifold, the only place this can occur - other than a leaky valve cover - is the front exhaust pipe where it runs under the engine. You'd have to be loosing a significant amount of oil to get it out of the bell housing onto the exhaust pipe in this location. Oil from this area tends to drop down under the pipe and move to the rear of the car.

Keep us posted on what they find.
