bigjayzway
Ok, I found a few good deals. I have narrowed it down to a 1997 STS, and a 1998 STS. The 1998 has 217000kms on it, but I don't know what to push to get the codes? The 1997 I will find out the kms tomorrow. Is there any advice, or a particular differences(other than style) I know they look different, just curious. I usually go with Devilles, and canadian95sts talked me into a STS. OynxSTS
On the 98 press the Info (up) and the on/off at the same time... IMO both at very nice cars... The 98 has a nicer looking rump... The 97 has a nicer looking front... As my wife knows I lean towards nice rumps... The choice is yours One thing about '97s Seems that just about every post on this board regarding Head gasket issues seems to be a '97... Probable just a coincidence. You're going to love the STS... I love mine! JasonA
There are two major differences: styling and mechanical. Yeah, that says a whole lot, right? Styling...is obviously very subjective. Although I like the 98-04 generation better as time goes on, I've always been partial to the 92-97 generation. Duh, look what I drive. I think there are few cars out there as distinctive as a 92-97 Seville. You can spot one from a mile away. They're so elongated and sleek. I think some of that beauty was lost in the 1998+ cars when the corners were rounded and the car was "stood up" some more. Mechanicals...the engines/transmissions are exactly the same, from 1995 through 1999 (inclusive). 2000 is when the Northstar was redesigned a bit with lower compression and optimized for regular fuel. The body structure itself is totally different between 97 and 98. The 98+ cars are on the G-chassis, which was the Oldsmobile Aurora and Buick Riviera at the time. I understand NVH was improved and the car was much tighter overall. That's understandable, as the 1997 was just a new 1992 design when it was manufactured. I also understand the Bose 4.0 sound system or whatever it was was a marked improvement over the previous Bose systems in the cars. Mine doesn't even have the Bose system, but the stock Delco is plenty for my needs (I'm hardly an audiophile). Since you're buying it used, I think I'd make a decision on the styling of the car you like most (97- or 98+), and then concentrate on finding one in good condition. ted tcb
In light of your wife's recent accident, consider that the 98 STS/SLS comes standard with both front and side airbags. It adds a 425 watt bose sound system with 7 speakers plus a 12in. sub., electroluminescent instrumensts ( 3D Lexus effect ), and power tilt/telescope. Mechanically, it drives the very same as a 97 STS, both having Stabiltrack suspension. The wheelbase is longer and track is wider on the 98, and NVH levels should be quieter based on 6 year newer technology in design. I agree with Jason in that the 97 is a timeless, elegant design, while the 98 offers some nice upgrades ... most important to me would be having side air bags. I wouldn't pay more than 9k for a 98 with 217000klm .... and for that price, it would have to be immaculate with service records. 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl
ted tcb
http://www.johnharrisautosales.com/car2/car2.htm This dealer is in St. Catherines, and although this D'Elegance is sold, he regularly has nice Devilles in stock, as well as STS's. In case the link doesn't work, try John Harris' Caddyshack. 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl

Bill K
I went from a 97 Concours to a 99 STS and wish now I had gotten a DTS for the extra room. If you have much back seat traffic the DTS is the way to go IMO.

I also do not like the paint jobs he gets done to touch up areas(you can see the work) it looks like a Maaco® job! Thanks a million guys. I found a 1997 STS with 205 oookms, and the dealer is asking $6900.00, but that is with a Lubrico warranty. I figure I can still get him down from that. Big Jay Life is too short to grow up! ted tcb
Thanks for the news on that Caddyshack dealer ... I've never driven down, I've only seen 5 footer pics on the net. Re Lubrico warranty, most dealers toss in a 12 or 24 month Lubrico powertrain, but the max claim can be as low as $1,500 to $2000 ... see if they will bump up the max claim ... $2k doesn't go far on a Northstar 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl
