cadillac_caddy_sts
Well its about 32 degrees C out and I have no AC I cant figure out whats wrong with it checked and theres no codes showing what should i be looking at? I dont no anything about AC systems and i suspect the one on my STS to be more complicated than on most vehicles but any help would be appreciated. Defending Northstar perf a qtr mile at a time!!!! TDK
cadillac_caddy_STS, No codes is interesting... You you might get lucky and have Kevin help you when it get down to a specific problem, but here are some easy starter questions: Did the A/C ever work? Did anything else happen to or with the car when it stopped working? Does the compressor turn when the temp is lowered, say to 60F? If it does not turn, then there could be any number of reasons, trouble with controls/fuses, bad pulleys/belt adjustment, no freon, bad compressor clutch assembly or bad compressor itself. If the compressor turns, is the large pipe going into it cold? If not cold then the compressor may be shot inside or the system lacks freon. If the compressor suction pipe almost too cold to touch, do the blowers work OK inside the car? Do you know anyone with a set of refrigerant gages? They might also know how to connect and read the hi/lo side pressures (assuming the compressor turns). If you get really lucky, it could simply need some freon. If so, the battery can be disconnected/reconnected to have the compressor turn long enough to add freon and get past the low freon pressure suction trip. There is a LOT of info on A/C. I would do a search, 30-days and over on "air conditioning" and review Scotty's latest endeavors and Kevin's comments just about anywhere regarding A/C. Good Luck Add power to leave problems behind. Most braking is just - poor planning.
jhall
cadillac_caddy_sts, Yeah, no codes is a bit more of a challenge, but it may be helping the situation toward a connection problem. Sounds like a connection problem I experienced on my '97 deville one time - or it could be an AC clutch relay problem. Get under the car and locate the connector on the AC compressor. This will be a tight reach - do it with a cold engine. Remove the connector and a look for burned contacts. If they are burned. Hit the dealer for a connector splice kit. Other possibility is that the compressor relay is shot. Open the fuse lid and read the legend to find the relay. Have someone turn the AC on/off while you have your finger on the relay. If it does not click, pull it out and check the coil and the contacts with an ohm meter. Good luck!
