Ac Blows Hot When Wot

Recommended Posts

i changed my power steering pressure line. now every tiime i WOT my 1998 STS the AC gets hot .. anybody know what this could be .. i know i spilt Power steering fluid on the belt but i sprayed Gunk degreaser on it and washed it off. Please help

I was going to say that it sounds like the belt might be slipping and spraying the degreaser on it maybe did not do the trick. Try changing the belt and see what happens.

If you really want to make people safe drivers again then simply remove all the safety features from cars. No more seat belts, ABS brakes, traction control, air bags or stability control. No more anything. You'll see how quickly people will slow down and once again learn to drive like "normal" humans.

When you WOT the compressor is designed to turn off and maybe that is what you are experiencing, with this heat, the compressor turning off immediately defrosts the evaportator and you smell it.

I am experiencing loss of air through the vents going uphill when the engine labors. No doubt the vacuum created by the laboring engine drops the supply vacuum. Coincidently I am having problems with a SLOW parking brake release! <_<

I plan on pulling my battery and inspecting that line and check valve..... Its a PIA to be going up hill and losing my AC! As soon as I let off the gas the vents start up again..... Aggravating!

Is this what you are experiencing?

ok ill tell one of my friends to check that out .. do you have any pictures or diagrams of that area ? so that they can get a general idea of what there looking for.

Re-read my post, I changed it greatly. It is normal for your AC compressor to CUT-OUT on WOT.... Smart idea allowing all available power to go to the commanded acceleration request, huh? (I have shut down the environmental systems Captain and diverted the power to the warp engines!, sound familiar?)

However, because it is SO hot out, the hot air quickly defrosts the evaporator. You feel the warmer air and smell the defrosted moisture that smells like crap...

So in this weather I think the WOT cut-out with warm AC is normal. BUT, You need to determine if your problem is because of WOT or because of a vacuum leak, which is accentuated when the engine labors up hill or on less than WOT acceleration. My impression is that your "problem" or condition is normal but more obvious because of the !@$&$* heat wave!

I can only say this, and call me a wimp, in this kind of HOT  weather, give her a break and don't WOT in the heat of the day, and enjoy your AC... There will be those who disagree with me, but I have observed that this kind of heat oil thins greatly, and IMHO its best not to beat on her with WOT's in the high heat and to wait until night-time, when she can take it more readily and still keep you cool  ... But that is coming from a wimp!

Don't forget Scotty's words, "Captain, I am givin her all she can take!"

I tend to agree with Scotty.

Scotty, yours does not sound like it's operating normally. like you, I would suspect the reservoir or check valve.

By the way, I find this topic to be very interesting as it highlights the complexity of the northstar system. It also highlights its genious.

Initially you look at this system and say, it sucks because of the WOT cut-out and hot air, and woner if the AC system is underrated or maybe the system should not cut out on WOT, or maybe the system should not cut-out on WOT above say 95 degrees... That was a mouthful...

BUT, its genious if you ask me...

1) the engine is only about 279 cu in, AMAZING

2) the engine gets GREAT gas mileage

3) the engine responds to your request of acceleration delivering as much as it can by turning off the compressor

4) if you stopped the WOT cut out, you would negatively impact acceleration

5) if you used a higher capacity AC unit to try to offset this you would negatively impact the engines fuel efficiency overall

6) if you stopped the WOT cut off above 95 degrees, the engine would feel like a pig on acceleration above 95 degrees as it would be impacted by the hot air and AC draw

This system is a finely tuned powerplant, and I am surprised by its genious all the time.. The only answer to this "problem" to me, it to boost it to 400 horsepower  bbobinski? (easy on me, please! )

heehee, slow down Scotty, i love the Northstar so much that i hope to fly behind one in the next 2-3 years if my rivetting skills and income allow me, but i must burst your bubble. All cars i know off shut off the ac compressor at wot, provided they are so equipped and the motor doesn't blow up before anyone notices the warm air. LOL
