GM's Cadillac selling own brand of bikes

July 26, 2005, 12:27 AM

DETROIT (AP) -- Driving off with a Cadillac can mean grabbing the handlebar and pedaling away.

The General Motors Corp. division is offering Cadillac-brand bicycles at select shops in the United States and Canada and at a few dealerships in Canada, said Cadillac General Manager Ron Lippner.

But they will go into wider distribution within months, said Cadillac Bicycles General Manager Ron Lippner. They sell for $500 to $1,900.

The bicycle maker Kent International Inc. created a Cadillac Bicycles unit under a licensing agreement with GM.

The decision was based largely on GM's desire to reach younger buyers, an executive said.

"The more unexpected brand contacts we can have, the more surprising it is for the consumer and the more chances we have to break through preconceptions of what they think they know about Cadillac now," Cadillac Accessories Manager Doug Schumacker told The Detroit News for a story Tuesday.

In 2002, Cadillac introduced the CTS, the first of a new line of vehicles with sharp angles and sleeker lines. Since then, brand sales have risen and the average age of buyers has dropped by about 10 years to the mid to late 40s.

Dealers will be able to add a bicycle to help close a sale or to give them away to show appreciation to customers or sales personnel, Schumacker said.

GM employees get a 25 percent discount on the bikes and account for most of the sales so far.

Images?? Are there any images??

If you really want to make people safe drivers again then simply remove all the safety features from cars. No more seat belts, ABS brakes, traction control, air bags or stability control. No more anything. You'll see how quickly people will slow down and once again learn to drive like "normal" humans.

They're using Shimano shifters. I would have thought that Cadillac would have went with Campagnolo instead.

Shimano does make some nice shifters, but Campagnolo is still pretty much the industry standard, IMHO.
