Sts Engine Problem??

Well, I've come into some more problems today. Dad took the '98 STS for the day and I had to use his '94 STS... Was a hot day and I was out and around the city but car was running great until I ran into this predicament this afternoon.

Did a fair bit of highway driving and pushed the caddy hard but nothing short of normal for such driving, despite this once I got home I did notice that the car engine seemed hotter (I could smell the heat practically) than usual once parked. Keep in mind, no overheating warnings or anything of that nature - the info centre showed that the coolant reached maybe a peak of 115ºC if i recall correctly.

Went back out after a quick rest - car started fine, ran good, and didn't notice anything wrong at all however on my way back home, as I was driving (relatively slowly 40-60km/h on sidestreets) I felt a weird jerk which seemed to be as it shifted (auto) from one gear to the next in Drive. Couldn't quite tell if it was a bump in the road, so decided I'd take it around the block again. Same thing didn't happen but this time the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light came on, as well as the ABS light flashed on and off every once in a while.

Pull into my driveway, and as I shift into park I notice that the car jerks a lot more violently than usual - this is a mint '94 STS and does not usually jerk at all when shifting. Tried it again several times - yup - as I shifted from Neutral to Drive, the whole care would jerk and it seemed quite out of the ordinary.

Decided to just leave it, popped the hood so it could attempt to cool off and figured I'd check the engine oil. Unfortunately the interior lights were left on while I cut the lawn and when I returned to the car, it wouldn't turn over. Attempted to start it a couple times, to no avail. There was sufficient power for the radio, lights, etc, and so I ran the diagnostic tests and came up with a only one code that seemed new - P016: Voltage Out of Range [ALL SOL]. Everything else seemed normal. Not sure what exactly this code means - someone like to clarify?

Moving on, my dad came home a couple hours later, we boosted the '94 STS and it started running, thought our problems were over. Unfortunately, they werent. Left the car running and came inside, went back out to check it 20 minutes later and it was dead. Boosted it again, this time the guages started acting all funny. Received a LOW FUEL warning when the tank was half-full, all the electronics seemed to be operating funny... Ran diagnostic and this time came up with a couple new codes - P041: No Cam Reference Signal from Ignition Control Module, I052: Keep Alive Memory Error. Car dies again. Boosts, goes funny, this time dies in a matter of a minute. Finally call CAA and have it towed over to my dad's mechanic - my dad and I couldn't figure out what was going on, especially in the dark of the night.

Anyone able to help clarify what these particular codes are referring to, and have any idea what could be causing this or contributing to the engine and electrical dying even after being boosted, or the guages bouncing around and giving a Low Fuel error?

Thanks for any and all input! (And for taking the time to read all that!)

- Nathan

My quick guess...

Battery pucked out. A bad battery and a Cadillac dont mix. Or maybe the alernater pucked and your into a too low of voltage state..

First item on my list would be a battery load test. What you have described could be caused by a battery that has reached the end of its service life.

Heat is a battery killer.

Thanks for the quick replies - I'll get the mechanic to first check the batt and alternators for faults, have come across a couple other posts pertaining to the P041 code that seem to have the same sort of description and most suggestions are to check out the alternator and/or battery. Should've had CAA check out the battery while they were here but just didn't have the time and energy (or thought0 to do it tonight

my 30 month old battery died yesterday. no crank and the voltage read 12v at the battery. hmm, i put a charger on it and after 30 min I at least got the starter to click. I checked the dash info and it said 9v. gotta be the battery I hope. threw in a new one and she fired right up. went to 1800 rpm though. annoying on a cold start but it finally settled down to about 1k rpm after about 10 sec or so. i checked the voltage and it read 13.5-14V. gotta keep my eye on the alt.

Turns out that the batt in the '94 was an Energizer bought in 1999 - supposedly a 7 year battery, so having a new one put in this morning. As its already at the shop I'm still going to have them check out the alternator once the new battery is in, hopefully all will be well once a new batt is in there.

I have experineced similar power defficiencies on my 93 STS 125K miles

Chronology:

Battery short ... replaced battery under warrantee...Battery failed again...went to auto electric specialist - replaced alternator...worked great for three days.

Problem:

Just limped home with same faults and new ones: Old ones like check engine light no transmission power familiar to low voltage condition on STS. New one of all electric power except emergency flashers died. Occurred at night. Turned car off. Waited in traffic for a few seconds. Car worked enough to get out of traffic. Low RPM under 30 MPH got home.

Action:

Will try to get codes myself before towing the beastie tomorrow.

What gives?

Please tell me you are NOT going to go with an Energizer battery again!!!

I would definately go with either an Ac Delco, or an Interstate battery.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the I052 could be that the PCM didn't have enough time to save info before the battery died (on a '95 the FSM says it takes 30 seconds to save info and if it loses power too soon, you have to reset the PCM).

Just my $0.02.
