Ya see, 'Ol Bob D post a picture of the rear of his car because taht's all anyone ever see's. And now that you jumped ship, you'll be seeing a lot more rears like that. As long as it's able to be driven. You thought NS's were a lot to maintain? Just wait until you see.

Who HERE has one? Not many. If you're talking about your Benz, I know a few people personally who can sympathize with you. In fact, I enjoy driving my Seville every day, and remark how tight the suspension feels even as we approach 150,000 miles.

C280? What's that...a large four or a small six? You'll be back to something with a real engine soon...

just wondering how many people have crapstars that leak oil, shake and rattle with broken motor mounts and have electrical gremlins in them???? I know I will NEVER own another one!

I have a Northstar (I'm not familiar with the Crapstar). Aside from a very slight oil drip on the garage floor, I have none of the problems you mention. Thank you for the heads-up, however. If I get tired of the old Eldo and look for a replacement, I will avoid the Crapstar if I find any ;) .

could "crapstar' be referring to the star that's found on the hood of Mercedes Benz?

If you really want to make people safe drivers again then simply remove all the safety features from cars. No more seat belts, ABS brakes, traction control, air bags or stability control. No more anything. You'll see how quickly people will slow down and once again learn to drive like "normal" humans.

Maybe this guy should look at the service bays in a mercedes dealer....ALWAYS FULL!

Caddy dealers, only a couple, and usually for minor stuff like oil changes!

Do a search of this guys posts and you see he has either a 93 or 94 Deville with a 4.9 so I don't know what he is talking about, and neither does he

What a TOOL!....Good job on the INVESTIGATION work Scotty!! B)

That's the guide number they use to start the billing at when you go to the dealer. A 280 basically starts at $280.00 then goes up from there.

Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.

Ya, if he is looking to MB for reliability he is DEFINATELY looking in the wrong place!!!

With its puny 228HP motor I'll be watching this guy get really small, really fast in my rear view mirrors!

Hmmm interesting point, let me throw down the promblems we've had with our 79 Mercedes over the past 10 years:

- Alternator left us on a warm summer's evening in the middle of Buttf*ck, Sask and a late night mechanic was able to fab up some alternator brushes so we could get back to a City where they might have a part for it.

- Alternator diode plate went out soon after that.

- Intake manifold gasket has leaked since we got it

- Cracked distributor cap ($130 from dealer)

- The A/C has never worked

- Sunroof never operates how it should (very sticky operation, have to pull closed almost all the time)

- Trunk leaks when it rains

- Transmission revs the engine at 60 mph at or around 4000 rpm in overdrive (makes for excellent gas milage)

- Doors are rotting from the inside out (and this was a California car)

When I have more time, I'll try to think of all the other headaches that we've had with it. But yea good luck with yours  . You think I'll ever buy a 500 SL? Again good luck  .

My only Mercedes was a 1999 Mercedes/Chrysler Cirrus ... same company, right?

Where to start .... a/c crapped out (Benz Crapstar origins?) at 25k, headlights fogged up by 30k, tranny shifting funny when I dumped it at 50k.

97 Northstar currently bulletproof at 82k .... ac perfect, headlights clear, tranny pulls like a runaway freightrain.

Well greggyc

Maybe you spoke too soon. I just came back from the store. And in the parking lot was a guy sitting in a new mercedes the engine running and was banging away from the banging and knocking it was making not a good sound I bet it was a rod knock plus engine oil on the ground and he was on his cell phone calling for a tow truck to come get the car..I parked next to him I left he was still there. All cars have problems..

Good Luck

Jim

A broken motor mount, which is very rare, I would think can be fixed without lifting the engine or can be done by the home mechanic? As far as oil leaks, admittedly, they can be a PITA, but they tend to be minor. Over time most cars develop oil leaks including Mercedes. Thanks JIM for an excellent example. Regarding "electrical gremlins", exactly what was the problem(s).

It sounds to me that overall you did not have any major problem. You mentioned three things at 95K and declared Northstars’ to be "crapstars." By the way, a broken motor mount and electrical problems have nothing to do with Northstar engineering per se. So you mention one thing having to do with the engine (oil leaks). So what’s the major crisis?

I got rid of my northstar as soon as it started falling apart at 95000 miles!

I knew this would stir up a stink!!!!!

Tell us what year car you had... You have posted NO questions or information regarding a NORTHSTAR..... Please enlighten us

All I hear is good things about the Northstar motor, even before I owned one. As far as Mercedes go, I rarely see them on the road as soon as they hit past 4 or 5 years old. I know other people have noticed this. I see elderly Caddies every day !!! Still haulin *smurf* like they were new! And as far as the new generation of Mercedes goes, I see endless eletrical problems with their headlights and taillights out every day. They appear to be right out of the showroom, $100k cars. Quality engineering huh.... <_<

ANY car will self destruct if it isn't properly maintained. Shame on the maintainer.

More than a quarter of a century ago I owned a '66 Dodge Dart that was more reliable than anything ever built to MIL spec. I suggest you look for one.

What Greggy obviously doesn't realize is that while all cars have problems, his chances of having better luck with a European car are pretty nil. The objective data just can't be ignored. Mercedes-Benz is often listed just mid-pack in terms of quality and reliability, while Cadillac (and many domestics) put up good rankings. Nevermind also that the Northstar was rated one of Ward's 10 best engines in 1995, and the 3.5L "Shortstar" was a 10-best in 1999 -- its first year out.

But -- that's all too late now, because he apparently already made the switch.

It seems to me that the quality of american cars is improving along with the attitude of the dealers and the foreign cars and dealers are in a decline. It will take the public a while to recognize this. As a buyer of american cars I will benefit from the publics misconception and the lower sale/resale value of these vehicles. Although I would like the american public to buy american cars and would be willing to pay the premium that would be placed on popular american cars, I will accept things as they are. I have owned my 97 sls for three years and I can not fault it, maybe three years from now things might change but going from past experience I think I will be in good shape. I confess that I have never been happy with dealers and their warrenty work so I tend to lean toward used cars that the previous owner has worked the bugs out of. I have purchased my trucks new and found them to be extremely dependable with little or no warrenty work. Mike
