WOT issue?

Sorry If this question has already been brought up, I tried to search the achieves but you can't seach for WOT..Since it is only 3 words :(.

Any way I was on the highway in 2nd doing some WOT maneuvers today....First time I went from 50 to 80.....Held her at about 80 then let off the gas....She coasted down to 50 then I punched her again...Got up to about 80 then let off the gas....Deceleration went fine until I reached about 3000=3500 rpm....Then out of no where I got a sudden boost of power...Took me up to about 4000-4500 rpm's...Scared the $hi! out of me...I said "great...now what have I done" Pulled over checked the codes...No codes...Put her back in D and got back on the highway...Drove around for about 20 minutes tonight and no apparent problems.

I know that the Trans. will do what it wants in order to protect the engine..Like how it will shift at redline while in 2nd....But never heard of it shifting like this while decelerating...And Im not even sure it did shift....It would make sense that the change is RPM's was just the trans going from 2nd to 1st...But why would it do that?...and would going from 2nd to 1st cause a increase of 2000 rpm's?...Im wondering if maybe a badly carbonized ring lost a big chunk of carbon during deceleration and thats why the there was an increase in power/rpm's?

Im at a loss...Hopefully someone knows what’s going on...Hopefully I didn't damage anything (I don't think I did)....Thanks guys....A.J

You did not mention whether or not the car actually ACCELLERATED or not during this condition. Chances are that it did not. Doing your WOT's in second is the way to go, and you say you did that. When you do the WOT in second, the car will upshift automatically, regardless of the shifter selection. Once you "let off the gas" the car will try to return to your manually selected gear if it does not exceed the rev limit. Chances are that the car "waited" until it could downshift safely, and did so once it "saw" the combination of "non over-rev" and the shifter in the "not overdrive" gear. At that point is where you "floor it" again, and repeat the process. You are best off doing WOT in second, as the upshifts and downshifts are slightly delayed for maximum performance. For some reason selecting the lowest gear does not produce the best results. It might be because the car defaults to second when "traction control" is turned off.

Sorry the car never accellerated when the incident occured...Just Rev'd higher. It caught me off guard because I swear I have WOT-ed in 2nd and then let the engine rev down to 1000 RPM's without an apparent down shift...I'm thinking now that I haven't....So I guess this is just a normal downshift?...Boy am I relieved...Thanks!

Sounds like you wound it up high enough in manual 2 that the PCM forced a shift to 3 to protect the driveline. As you coasted down it reached the normal 3-2 lockout point and just downshifted back to 2. Sounds perfectly normal.

Yea I've been down the whole "redline shift route" when the trans will shift then momentarily pause before selecting a gear. But I intentionally did not bring it up to 6000, so it wouldn't shift.....As I said before I brought it up to about 5500 RPM's (with out a shift) then let off the gas (seemingly still in second...No change in gears/RPM's) and once the RPM's got down to 3500 or so, it seemed to shift into 1st or something (or 2nd...But I swear there was never an upshift)....What ever the reason it got a 1500-2000 boost in RPM's...I guess it went from 3rd to 2nd...Maybe it switched gears when I let of the gas and that's why I didn't notice it? (if so, it happened instantaneously as the second I let of the gas the engine began to “break”…no searching for gears)....Only thing I can think of...Anyhow, I Just got back from a 120 mile round trip..All is fine and well.
