Torque converter lockup?

My 99 STS with 45K miles doesn't seem to be upshifting as many times as it should. I count 4 upshifts total from a dead stop. Shouldn't I have 5? That would include the torque converter lockup right? When I'm in "D" I can down shift to third so I know all my gears are there, but shouldn't I notice the RPM's go down when the converter locks up?

Car doesn't seem to downshift as quickly as it used to. In other words when I make a fairly significant throttle change this car would downshift and go RIGHT NOW. Now it simply accelerates off without downshifting, much less fun.

Any thoughts?

TIA

First to second is one shift.

Second to third is two.

Third to fourth (OD) is three.

And lockup (if you can feel it) is four.

Jim, Your explanation is better than mine, either way, I'm not getting any lockup. Even if I can't feel it, you could see it on the tach.

Anyone have any idea why? Is it a sensor?

While driving with constant speed (50-60) and gas pedal depressed, with (your) left foot slightly tap the brake pedal to activate the brake switch and unlock the converter. If you see 100-200 RPM increase your converter lock-up is working properly.

Could be a TCC solenoid but that should set DTC. Maybe a bad or mis adjusted switch on the brake pedal. Search the archives for TCC or VCC. Lots of info on it.

Great ideas guys, I'll check them out. No codes show up and I'm certain its not the air kicking on.

Let me ask everyone this, I have a Mitsubishi Diamonte that "learns" driving habits and adjusts shift points to the driver. Is there a chance in hell that this thing thinks I'm looking for gas mileage and has decided to shift like an old lady? The thing drives like the "Cadillac" that everyone thinks it is. I can't stand this any longer.

No, Cadillac would not do that.

Okay guys, converter lockup IS working, but still is slow to downshift. At times I have a bit of a shake at idle, could it be that the thing is missing a bit?

Would a small miss on one cylinder cause the car to be slow to downshift? I pulled the front spark plugs and the number 6 plug was wet with gasoline, whats up with that? Leaky fuel injector? Would that cause a miss?

Thanks again.

Yeah, sounds like a leaky injector. If it was "wet" then maybe the cylinder is not firing at all. There's your mis. I wouldn't think that would affect shifts though.

Thanks guys, I'll check out the injectors.

Whats up with the fuel rail recall? I'm not familiar with that.

Several members had to replace plug wires right after fuel line recall.
