seattle_fleetwood
Just when I start to need my a/c, the compressor seized up, and now my poor car won't start because the pulley won't even turn. I'm getting ready to change out the compressor, and since my system has been emptied of all R-12, I'm thinking this will be a good time to update to R-134...does anyone have any tips on what I should or shouldn't do when I'm replacing my copressor and switching over to R-134? Ranger
Do a search for R134a conversion. It has been discussed quite a lot and KHE has posted what is neccasary. Here is the latest post. http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...134a+conversion
Scotty
I am not sure if anyone has ever by-passed a compressor on a 4.9, but it may be worth the effort if you don't plan on getting it fixed quickly or need you car before you get it fixed. You by pass your compressor with a short belt. Looking at this diagram however, it doesn't look like its possible to by-pass the compressor..unless you remove it Mike
Scotty
I was looking at the serp belt diagram and it looks to me that if you were to try and by pass the compressor that the only belt routing would turn the water pump in the wrong direction, unless I am mistaken. How long has the compressor been making noise? Does the compressor problem that caused the cease seem to be the hub assembly or internal damage? adallak
I wanted to bypass AC compressor too since I do not use it anyway. It is impossible to use a shorter belt on 4.9. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent

Adallak how would you re-route it? Is the compressor left in place? I don't recall anyone doing this. If you shorten the belt and go around the water pump it would turn in the opposite direction whish I don't think it can do in order to circulate water in the correct direction. It is easier on the NS as the water pump is on the other side of the engine, what do you think?

I am sure the compressor is fine. The refrigerant is low, but I preffer open windows and do not really care of AC.
