Backyard/Shade Tree Leak Detection

Other than looking for tell tale oil residue, is there a method for leak detection that DOESN'T use a sniffer (Electronic Device)? Is there such a thing as a can of 134A with a dye. If so, is the dye harmful like the stop-leak added 134A?

There is a 'special' liquid for Freon leak detection that comes in a plastic bottle, with a very small tube attached to it, for dispensing. It looks like a glycerine. It is used much the same way as soapy water, but it has properties such that it bubbles up with very minute leaks, such as a Freon leak. You squirt it on fittings and problematic areas. I don't know where you get it, a friend of mine who services A/C gave me a bottle to use.

However, for small leaks, your best bet is an electronic sniffer. I had a minute pinhole leak in my accumulator/dryer, where the pressure sensor aluminum fitting was welded to the tank, but the liquid would not pick it up. I eventually found it with an electronic sniffer. It was in a difficult area to see, because of the insulation around the accumulator.

Dye shouldn't harm anything provided it is used in the proper quantity. Interdymanics makes a nice leak detector kit for the DIY - A/C, oil, coolant, etc. that includes the UV lamp, glasses, injector, and dye for a reasonable price.

Oil residue is not a reliable telltale in systems that use a water soluble lubricant, unless the leak is massive, in which case you're probably more likely to "hear" the source.

For visible areas, you can't beat some water, detergent, and a sponge to create/distribute soap solution and bubbles.

Thanks Guys for the ideas. A Snooping I'll go be it an Interdymanics kit or soapy to start. I grabbed some 134A at WM. WOW, More than 7 a can. That was better than 14 a can at another place. 134A, the NEW gold.
