Rear shocks simply air shocks???

I'm curious, are the rears on our cars simply air shocks with a leveling system??? I changed out the front struts on my Eldo last week and now I notice a little noise and mushiness in the rear... I thought these were just air shocks, but are they an air and oil system???

I believe they're air and oil...especially if you have active suspension. Even otherwise, I think the shock is kind of "2 in 1". There's an air bag portion that provides lift, but there's also a regular gas shock inside. I don't think it's possible to have a shock JUST filled with air. That's called an "air spring".

They're typical air shocks. The shock itself is essentially a regular shock absorber with a piston and oil. The air part come from a rubber bladder that wraps around the upper and lower shock housings. This bladder is inflated / deflated to set the ride height. A compressor and height sensor work together establish the correct height.

The ETC for that year should have the active suspension, so the right answer is BOTH. The air portion of the shock provides the lift for the automatic ride height control. The active suspension works by altering the valving electrically inside the shock, both on bound and rebound. The valving can only work on the oil portion of the shock. This must be true, otherwise they would not cost $450.00 each for GM replacements.

Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.

Wake,

I too have a 98 Eldo ETC and am considering new front shocks. Did you get yours from the dealer? What alternatives are there?

Thanks, Alan Wise
