Dreaded AC Problems...'92 STS

Recommended Posts

Well I have the HVAC System going into "Fail Safe" Mode...it turns on the defroster at 75 degrees, and then "Blanks out" i.e. ------- on most of the digital indications in the instrument cluster. I researched it before here, and indications were either the ECM Computer located in the passenger's floorboard area, or the Instrument cluster itself, well I installed a new ECM last week, and the A/C worked great for an hour or so...then I stopped for awhile, cranked it up again and back to the Pyscho Defroster mode. Boy having that heater on in the West Texas Summer isn't fun...I guess it is the IPC Cluster...anyone got any info or other choices. I know there is a place in Canada that repairs the IPC's but I was hopeing to avoid that...I am trying to dodge the $200.00 fee too! Iunderstand this problem was fairly common to '92 Sevilles, and Eldo's...I just can't find the old threads on the subject...Thanks

Yeap....it sounds like a bad IPC. Circuit 800, 'loss of data' codes...

Classic signals.....everything ok......then......data goes away.....get the classic '--' display.....the the 'service engine' message......goes into defrost mode.......

Delco radio/speedometer shops do have reman clusters/IPCs. $300 exchange with you doing the labor.

That being said.....the GM cluster terminals cannot really detect this circuit 800 failure mode. To them the display mode of '--' is normal. So...in some cases its taking 3-4 'rebuilt' clusters to fix this issue.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have had the same problems. They went completely away after completely cleaning my battery terminals and cables with a wire brush and replacing both IPC fuses in the trunk. (neither fuse appeared bad, but the IPC was going on and off into defroster mode like you described for months until one day it went completely out and doing these steps has fixed the problem completely)
