qualified645
I have a 97 Deville that the shifter is stiff as a board. I was told by a couple of people (repair shop) that it was the cable so I ordered a new cable and put it in without swearing too much but got the job done. Put it all back together and that did not fix the problem. By the way, the old cable moved every bit as easily as the new one so that exercise was just so I would learn how to do it. Anyway, right now I have both ends of the cable off, put the column back up with nothing attached to it- stiff as a board. What is in the column that may need lubrication or worn out? (shouldn't be worn out - 129,000 miles on it.) Also, how do I get the silly thing apart also? Thank you
rockfangd
Fairly decent fix. The ball is dry in the column. I have a picture somewhere. I have the same car. Would be really bad, especially in the winter. I used white lithium grease for the repair. I made the mistake of replacing the cable. But it couldn't hurt. Go to General Cadillac Forum tab (First one) I bumped my topic to the top. Labeled same thing. Stiff Shifter 1997 Cadillac Deville. Drop the 2 panels below the column (dash part and plate behind it) Drop 4 nuts that hold up the column. Carefully lower the column enough to see the top. You will see the pivot. Has info and pic. qualified645
Thanks, rockfangd. I did see your picture and that was the next thing I did was to get a little brush and apply some white lithium grease to that ball and along the track that it takes while being shifted. It is still stiff. I was trying to look to see where else it mite need some grease but really couldn't see anyplace that it was rubbing or wearing. I don't know what is inside the shift lever housing but I would like to get in there and look. That is the only place left. I have no idea how to get in there but I guess I start by getting the steering wheel off. Any other points to make or suggestions? Thanks again. By the way, you did a good job of taking that picture. rockfangd
Did you thoroughly clean and lubricate that area? I had to work mine pretty good before it freed up nicely. Iirc there is a part beneath that pivot that needs grease as well. I did not disassemble the column to do it though. qualified645
I need to go back to your picture to see what else needs grease. Is the pivot that you are talking about need to be removed with an allen wrench?
rockfangd
I did not remove that. Quote GM FAN FOREVER Nice, clean, luxury= fine automobile
