cdictas
Guys, I have read through most of the posting on alternator replacement/rebuilding. Has anyone attempted to spray WD40 behind the pulley in an attempt/hope the WD40 can work its way into bearing? Chuck
Ranger
WD40 is WAY to thin. Even if it got into the bearing, centrifugal force would sling it out. It needs grease.
Scotty
What year? 4.9 or NS? As Ranger said, WD40 will not do the trick if anything it may wash out the grease altogether. Is it the front or rear bearing? The rear is easy the front is hard to replace. I pulled my alternator out took it apart, and took it to a rebuilder and had them replace JUST the front bearing. Obviously you could just give it to them and say, bearings and brushes only....or have it rebuilt.. My bearing was made in CHINA and had a flat spot that would jam up when you rolled it in your fingers Early on sailors navigated by the stars at night and the North star became the symbol for finding ones way home. cdictas
Mike. Sorry for not being more specfic. 99 cadillac STS (N*) It sounds like the front bearing (used my mechanics stethoscope). Chuck
Scotty
Mike. Sorry for not being more specfic. 99 cadillac STS (N*) It sounds like the front bearing (used my mechanics stethoscope). Chuck OK, if you were able to localize it good, however be advised that it still could be other items. I would have bet YOUR life that my alterntor or steering pump were whining when it was my AC hub...... The only way to be sure is to eliminate the AC hub from the serp circuit. However, if you are reasonably sure that it IS your alternator you could have it rebuilt. Do you have any rebuilders near you? The front bearing at least on the 91 is very hard to get at as you need a special tool to remove/release the pulley. One thing if you replace it I believe a few have NOT had good results with cheap rebuilds from pep boys, etc... or aftermarket alternators... OEM rebuilt or new OEM..
