Intake leak?

Logan

Recommended Posts

Hmmm.....started having rough hunting idle yesterday......check engine lamp on today.

Code Po171 and 174 stored.

Tech 2 clearly shows car is lean at idle.

Spraying carb cleaner around I found the leak. Its leaking at the intake rubber boot.

See picture. Whats leaking is around #2.....

I'll see if Cadillac has the part in the morning.

Sure enough.....the rubber coupler has a crack. In the picture the green pen is propping it open slightly.

The intake has to come off to replace this.....

$24 part @ Cadillac

New coupler....intake going back on....

Hmm, I did not realize there was a coupler at that location!, what were the symptoms again? Hunting idle, meaning 600 to 1000 rpm and back?

That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't recall seing one on my car but I have to admit I never looked very close. I just assumed the TB was bolted to the manifold like the 3800 on my wifes Bonneville.

Slow idle.....575 to 650 flucuation. You could feel it in gear. Friday the service lamp came on. Codes showed lean O2 both banks.

To be honest, at first I thought it was bad gas. Problem started about a mile after putting some gas in.

This coupler is on the newer version N*. Dont know if the older ones have it.

Its kind of strange it failed. It just sits there with no load on it.

Logan,

How long did it take you to remove the intake manifold? Are there intake gaskets that need to replaced? I think I'll be replacing my starter in my 99 at some point in time, so I'm trying to get a handle on how long it will take.

Thanks,

Chuck

Yes there are intake gaskets. They are reusable. They kind of stay with the intake.

I know these post are from a long time ago, but is there any way to view the pictures? I dont seem to pull them up. I have the same problem with the hunting idle along with the PO171 & PO174 that just popped up.

I have this photo someplace on my desktop but can't get to it easily. There is a RUBBER collar if I recall between the throttle body and the intake plenum that cracked and was leaking check it closely, Mike

Maybe Logan will pop in with photos

 When I see a photo that illustrates an unusual circumstance, I save it. In this instance, its on my desktop but my desktop is not operational. When Frank from Germany was having problems I posted your photo in his thread and retrieved it from that thread. The sick thing is how I find what I am looking for, I think that my thought process if very non linear, here is how I found it >> I have continually referred to that rubber collar that you found cracked as a COLLAR..... SO, I searched under Scotty and BBF for COLLAR and walla, there was the photo!

I have been told that I can find anything, its a challange to me... Here is the thread, see post #83 by Scotty in this thread > <a href="http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...=4892&st=75" target="_blank">http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...=4892&st=75</a>

Thanks

By the way, I have 4 hard drives in my desktop with about 800 gigs of space..three of which are Seagate Cheetah SCSI 5.6 ms drives

I am new to this post - can you send me the picture - I have the same codes, P0171 and P0174 - very strange behavior...the engine seems like it wants to die at cruising speeds (65 mph)...it jerks and the rpm drops.
