jvf1095
Hello All..... This might sound like a foolish question, but here goes. Reading through many posts on this forum, others & on the net in general; I see that there are Northstars out these that have never experienced a problem with the bolts deteriorating/ pulling away etc. And of course, some that have. What I have read, is that there seems to be a loose consensus that it can happen at the 80,000 to 100,000 mile mark. My assumption with those cars is that they were driven everyday & had the "normal" amount of miles per year put on them? With that, this is my "concern". I have a car that is 23 years old, with only 27,000 miles on it. The woman that owned the car passed a few years after she purchased it & my assumption is that the car sat around & wasn't driven much in the 20 year period between when she died & when I got the car. One of the first things I did when I got it was to change the Dexcool not once, but a few times to make sure it was fresh because I had no idea of when it was last done. So is it possible that the head bolts can begin to deteriorate on these Nothstars from non-use, just sitting around for a long time & not being driven? Logan
Any mass produced engine that uses a aluminum block....will have some that pull head bolts in the field. The Northstar block head bolt issue is pretty tame compared to the Toyota 2.4L head bolt issue. Search on Google 'Toyota pulled head bolt 2.4'. Interesting.....both the Northstar (most) and Toyota blocks use the same size bolt.....M11 x 1.5 bolt. J-42385 Time Sert repair kits are available for each engine. They both use the same insert 11155. rockfangd
I would not worry one bit about it. With regular maintenance you will have done all you can do to prevent it. If it does happen then worry about it. But I have learned in life that there is no sense worrying about things that could happen but do not always happen BodybyFisher 1 Quote GM FAN FOREVER Nice, clean, luxury= fine automobile

rockfangd
Honestly when I am driving my Caddys hard It never crosses my mind. I have owned these for years and have had bare minimal problems. I love to hear the NorthStar roar. If it ever happens then I will worry about it then I do not recommend babying them. They were not designed for that and the ones that are tend to have more problems (EGR, sludge in intake, etc...) I preach to 20 mpg driven spiritedly on both of my 97s BodybyFisher 1 Quote GM FAN FOREVER Nice, clean, luxury= fine automobile
