kcd1184
In order to locate a noise, can I just remove the belt from the alternator and fire it up, or do I need to take the belt off completely? Kent PS- Rear brake replacement went smooth. Installed new pads and took the glaze off of the rotors with emery cloth. They seemed to be in good condition. Nice with the top hinge point. navion
Kent, It is always safer to remove the belt. It can snag on the crank vibration dampner & cause all kinds of havoc. I know that it is a pain to reinstall, but it is safer to remove it. Take a good look at the belt's grooved side to see if it is showing a lot of cracks. This would be a good time to replace the belt if it has lots of miles, or an unknown amount of miles. I always save the old belt & carry it in the spare tire compartment. If the new one gets damaged & you are in Timbuctoo, it can save the day. Britt Britt
Ranger
Kent, All you really need to do is put a breaker bar on the tensioner and release the tension just enough to let the belt slip. It will stop turning and so will the accessories.
decosse
It's the A/C compressor! Well .... that's my guess. Been there, done that - replaced everything else first, pretty much. (94STS so essentially the same)
