Oil Change near disaster

Change engine oil message came on the 98 Eldo and it was convient to go to Sears. Been happy with them before so why not!

Told the service clerk that it took 7 quart plus. Took a mall walk and came back to pick it up. Questioned the clerk if the extra quarts were put in because the price quoted was the normal 5 quart price.

His response was " I would think so as I wrote it on the work order." My response was " That's not the answer I was looking for"

He then said " I'll go check" When he came back, The clerk said "Oh yes he put in a little over 8 1/2 quarts, and checking the dip stick to be sure it was full. Didn't charge us for the extra. "

We made a strong objection saying that the engine could be damaged with the overfill. We went out to look and the dip stick showed above the maximum line and onto the cable. Had the tech drain the excess.

Even showd him the warning in the owners manual and his statement was "Oh they all say that!" "Next time tell us exactly how much to put in."

We lost a beautiful Triple yellow 82 Coupe DeVille with an overfilled gas station oil job.

Could you imagine trying to get Sears to replace a N*???

Id contact head office and complain.

Yes they do all say that.

Think there may be a reason for it ?

Either way....If there service personal cant do an oil change properly (no matter what the vehicle), head office should be informed.

Good thing your one of the few that scrutinize the work before you drive away. It can be very scary.

My wife left one of those quick stop lube places once with no oil. The stopper on the dip stick was brocken so the "TECH" drained out all the oil after the fill !

She had even argued with the guy telling him it was broken, but he didnt believe her. Kept tellin her it was supposed to be that way. Fortunatelly no damage done.

Took the car to Its mother company round my corner. They went over it all again and were shocked at what had been checked as ok. Not to mention the oil was empty.

Complained to head office and ended up recieving an envelope in the mail stuffed with vouchers for free oil changes.

Needles to say i gave them away and never dealt with that corporation again.

But they should at least know. If not for your benifit, but for the benifit of others that arent quite as astute as you.

The extra quart in the crankcase probably would not have hurt anything. It would have been churned up by the crank and the vapor/excess would have been sucked up by the PCV system and burned during combustion.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, wouldn't the oil (being churned) become aerated (spelling) creating cavitation within the oil supply to the engine?

Also, does the Northstar engines have windage trays ( I believe that is what they're refereed too in my Pontiac)?

It's not amazing; rather, it's typical. Why do you think I change my own oil? The money I save isn't hardly worth weaseling under the car, dinking around with trying not to make a mess and getting the old oil into a container. Of course, you have to remember to make a specail trip to dump it. And of course, when you get there, the place says, "The oil dump is full, sorry." Being in the trenches, I know that it's the only way I can ensure that it's 100% Fixed, 100% Rigt.

Well said! Some of the many reasons I do my own oil changes.

Ditto that... I'm so anal, before I take the car anywhere the wheels will come off (like for new tires, state inspection, etc), I'll take the center caps off and leave them at home, so they don't go prying away at them with God's own screwdriver and scratch the heck out of the caps or the wheels. I try to leave it as simple as possible for them!

I do the same thing when I buy new tires. On the Fleetwood, I also remove the fender skirts as I don't want the tire monkies screwing them up....

I also verify that the tire shop has the proper equipment to dismount/mount tires on aluminum rims. You'd be surprised (maybe not... ) at the number of tire shops that want to use the old mounting machines made for steel wheels. The ones where they use the pry-bar type tool to begin the dismounting.......

I take my own oil and filter to my local tire shop and they change it for $6.50 while I am standing there watching. I also get to look at the undercarriage while it is up on the lift. They take the old oil and filter, I pay and leave. Hardly worth crawling under the car to change it. Especially since they tar and chipped our gravel road and I do not need the old oil to keep the dust down. EPA also got picky about that. ;):P

Scary, I am just glad that I am mechanically inclined enough to be able to handle most all my own maintenance and larger scale repairs. Like some of you mentioned I am always nervous anytime my Baby has to be handed over to a "real mechanic" for state inspection, tire mounting, etc.

I feel others who are always at the mercy of the shop! Though this board does much to educate us and keep us in control.

Amazing that a shop cannot make a simple oil change.....

I guess I am pretty lucky. I hit the local "Victory Lane" quicky oil change place and the kids that work there are remarkably well informed and knowlegeable and pretty professional about the whole thing. They know what kind of oil and how much for Northstars (without me prompting them) and have never screwed up todate.....

So I’m not the only gearhead that doesn’t change his own oil, huh?

Well, now I feel better. Actually, I have an arrangement at a buddy’s shop down the hill near my company. All I do is bring the oil and filters with any of my rides, and he’ll do it for free, as long as I leave it for the day.

Well..”free”..usually an exchange of a Cuban cigar, a Cialis or two will cover it for quite some time.

A gentleman’s agreement, you know.. ;)

:lol::lol: For those quality experiences! For those lasting more than 4 hours, crack open a bottle of Champagne! (forget seeing your doctor)

I actually change my oil (as I trust no one with my cars), my wife hates that I change it and thinks its a low life thing to do, I still can not understand that line of thinking...

I do that as well! I wish the previous owner of my car did though because there were already chips and scratchs around were the caps fit in from people pring them off with a little screw driver!!!! <_<

the "company car" goes to the Victory Lane.....why..???....GM will not reimburse me for doing the oil change myself but they will gladly cover the cost of the commercial oil change.....customers do it so I should to, to see what really happens and/or what problems they have....If they screw it up it IS a "company car...LOL........

I would gladly let someone else change the oil in that situation.

Hey Guru,

What is that new Suburban Like?

What's under the hood?

4-Wheel Drive?

Stability control system?

Traction Control? Can you turn it off in low range?

Some of my fondest memories were low range in a

1988 Suburban with the peddle to the floor...driving like

a madman - side to side - 6" of snow on back roads...LOL

Enjoy that TANK!
