franey
This is an opportunity for every one to test their skills. THe problem is this 97 sts , 136000 miles. MAN got off work went out to start car , the car backfired while he was starting car , but car still started. ON the way home he heard a loud rattle noise coming from the engine area. He figured if you could drive one of these cars home with out any water, then you ought to be able to drive one with a loud rattle. He made it home and parked it in drive way and was going to take it to the garage the next morning. The next morning it would not start. Starter made no noise at all. HE called tow truck and had towed to shop. Now what do you think was wroung, hint , this is not a code issue. PLEASE post your thoughts, or questions and after we kick it around a while. the answer will be revealed.

chriskoc1
Mouse home in the engine, and squirel in the tail pipe. I could just see the animal fly after being shot out of the exhaust.
TDK
Injector failed, blew hole in piston due to hydrolock, lost oil pan seal and engine locked up after shutdown. <_< Hope not, but anything that locks the engine after rattling - is never good. Add power to leave problems behind. Most braking is just - poor planning.
jackc
It wasn't really a backfire. The battery blew up right as it started. The rattling was pieces of it bouncing around in the belt. He drove home on the alternator.
scottshoe
I am guessing that the alternator pulley and/or belt tensioner took a dump and he drove home on the battery... thus the reason the car would not do anything the next morning. Scotty
I am going to side with jack, that the battery blew up, he had enough juice with the alternator to get him home, and the battery was dead in the morning. If his serp belt went, he would not have power steering or alternator which you did not mention and no alternator would have thrown a code. Early on sailors navigated by the stars at night and the North star became the symbol for finding ones way home. Once you know where the Northstar is you can point your ship in the right direction to get home. So the star became a symbol for finding ones way home or more symbolically even finding ones path in life.
franey
AND THE ANSWER IS.... IF you recall i said the car backfired when it went to start, well when it did this , evidently the starter was still engaged to the flywheel and kicked back, the result was a large piece of the starter housing that covers the throwout gear some how got in a bind by the flywheel evidently applying torque on the starter drive gear and broke off a large piece of the starter houseing which covers the drive gear. THE piece that broke off was banging around on top of the flywheel as it rotated, it was so large that it would not fall down on either side of the flywheel. It is assumed that after it backfired the starter had once last bit of dying breath left in it and he was able to start the car. HOWever, the piece banging around all the way home did the starter in and when he went to restart in the morning, it was a no go. After the starter was removed and a new one was installed it started right up. I advised him , that he might want to look at the fuel pressure regulator valve , with regards to the backfire. ODD but it did happen.
