Scotty
I would take it out and use a wire brush on it. I cleaned the pindle from the inside with 22 caliber Hobbes rifle cleaning round steel and brass brushes from the open hole while pushing in and turning the pindle with a T wrench. Here is a photo after it is cleaned. Tap it throughout the cleaning process you will be surprised how much dust and dirt comes out, avoid breathing the dust and wash your hands. Try to avoid using any solvents. When it is dirty it sticks.. Mike Early on sailors navigated by the stars at night and the North star became the symbol for finding ones way home. Once you know where the Northstar is you can point your ship in the right direction to get home. So the star became a symbol for finding ones way home or more symbolically even finding ones path in life.
