burnt smell and 18 codes dead battery

Recommended Posts

my girl was driving on the highway and got a battery no charge message, and a burnt smell.  by the time she got home 18 more codes appeared and now the battery is dead.  to me yje codes for the most part are all wiring codes but not sure if its wiring that vexes me or a faulty battery/alternator that's causing the codes to be dispatched. any and all advice would be welcome.  its on a 97 deville 4.6 y code

thnk you

Post the codes.

Your alternator might have just gave up and overheated the windings, its a terrible smell.   The codes would come from low current/voltage.  The summer heat can push them to their limit.

Post the codes.  Load test the battery to be sure its ok and look to see what the charging voltage rate is on the dash.

See if the belt is still on.

That would do above as well, except you did not mention anything about the steering.

If the belt is intact inspect the battery cables and have a look at the alternator

Most big box parts stores, wallyworld and sears will test your alternator running on car.

That would rule out bad alt.

Im thinkin' the PCM is frying out.
