All you experts are going to laugh at me

Ok

so I ended up with a mint 98 STS as part of a deal

there is no sound coming out of the stereo so after looking at the antique mini disc / tape set up I thought I would just pull the lot out and

fit more modern stuff

obviously I now know that if you pull the head unit and amp half the car's electrical systems go mad

5hrs of my life gone that  i'll never get back and still no sounds

any experts have any advice ?

perhaps  just the amp has died but I need a little guidance on how to troubleshoot the system

Is this a Bose system?, its an STS so my guess is yes.

Each speaker has its own amp.  Each speaker/amp receives line level from the head unit not speaker level inputs.

Explain where you are at and what the problems are.

If you want to install a modern unit, you will need an adapter between the head unit and each door / deck speaker.

A work around would be to scratch the bose system altogether and replace all speakers and wire them to the new head unit.

There are adapters that you can buy to retain your steering wheel controls

Visit crutchfield.com its a good place to start.

Google, head unit bose interface

Thanks for the reply !

It is as you guess a bose system - my plan was to remove the head unit and replace it with a more modern unit

what happens is if you remove the unit the security system locks the parking brake, fuel gauge goes to zero , battery light comes on etc

is there a module available to stop this ?

Looking at the wiring diagram the speakers don't have individual amplification - line level signals of just left and right come from the head unit and cd player to the amp

……… you can see my problem...….

Ok, what I would do if I were you would be to go to http://www.crutchfield.com and put in your 98 STS with Bose system.  You can filter for double-din, android, iphone, retain steering wheel controls, RAP, bluetooth, and other stuff. You can retain the chime, etc.  It looks like you can successfully convert to a modern head unit.

I also would put a call into their tech support and get specific info from them.

You can buy an installation kit with all brackets and adapters for the wiring.

As you know you can go crazy and add GPS also.

These guys can also be very helpful for adapters and equipment.  Also call their tech support.

Why not hunt the parts yard for a BOSE head unit out of another GM car?

Usually $100 bucks or so.

Then its just plug n play

Units after 03? are vin# locked so be warned.

Why screw around with parts and non GM pieces?  Esp. with that BOSE set up!

That is incorrect.

98+ is vin encrypted. Cadillac only.

There is no upgrade for your 98 unless you want the 12 disc changer.

Although newer units may plug in they will not function. There are many that look identical but are not in functionality. I have done writeups on both of mine with what I went through.

The parking brake issue does not sound like it would be radio related but I suppose so. When the datalink is down goofy things happen.

Another alternative is to leave the original unit and install your own. Not the easiest thing I realize.

These issues with can bus data bus from individual components is very true.

One unusual solution is to record the can bus and look for signals that relate to the various modules.

You can use several different can bus hacking tools from the webs.

Once you dial in the expected call and response you can use an arduino and a can bus adapter to emulate the needed response I did this after upgrading my seville to Air ride when the magnaride controller locked out the 80MPH plus.

With these older vehicles the computer hardware is so outdated your phone typically has much more capability than what is needed for the car.

I have EFI controllers for the TBI systems and trans controllers for 4l60E and 4L80E and soon 4T80E already I am on version four of the prototypes using my 1995 truck as the test bed. I will be constructing a full controller for my seville build and will post links to the git hub there. For my truck I am opting to use more common carburetor performance tuning metaphors instead of the typical VE tables and  Fuel Spark tables left over from the time before the microprocessors became fast enough to do the calculations realtime. All of the Tuner guys are stuck in spreadsheet metaphor that came from years of having to burn eprom data on to memcals before eeprom. Most of the GM processors are prior to MOC921 and Even BasicStamp so the aftermarket has adopted the memcal compromise. The one that I enjoyed the most was the GM66ECU stuffed it into everything after 1989. The military grade aluminum case OBD1.5 and the OBDII sheetmetal case are good controllers but a simple arduino 2560 or a teensy 3.1 has more capability for a lot less money.
