start up goes dead when button is pushed

Recommended Posts

05 STS  3.6L   Everything except the radio goes dead when I push the starter button. I hear a click in the under hood fuse panel after 40 seconds and everything comes back on.  I can jump the starter relay and have someone push the button at the same time and it starts right up. I've checked and cleaned battery connections and grounds, replaced ignition push button.   Where to next ?

This sounds possibly related to the security  system "you can jump the starter relay and have someone push the button at the same time"

Something is wrong or interrupting key start power to the solenoid energize circuit that you provide by jumping it.

What happens when you simply jump it without the button pushed?

If I jump the relay without someone inside to hit the button it just cranks without firing.

I need to locate a schematic of your start system.  Give me a day or so, I had surgery and am in the process of recovering.  I need to visit the library and pull up alldata

Ok, if you jump the relay, and someone pushes the button, it starts.

Then it seems that something isn't energizing the relay, do we agree on this?

It also eliminates any problems with the starter.

Do you have a voltmeter?

I was at the library tonight, this schematic printed small for some unknown reason, and they closed on me, Ill go back tomorrow and try to reprint it.  See what you can see from this.  There are 2 starter relay fuses.   I don't think this print will help much.   I do have the starter circuit description which I will post that might be helpful

I've just discovered that if I press and release the ignition button then go jump the starter relay it starts.  More fuel for thought

That kind of makes sense to me based on the write up above.

Never was able to fix this issue. Any ideas where to go ?  Much appreciated

I was thinking about you and this problem but you have been away.   Were you able to read the diagram I posted above?
