BugsyC
Hi all,My new (to me) 02 Eldorado started giving security light and warnings "car may not start","wait 3 minutes" after the battery was disconnected and then reconnected. One mechanic said he needed to reprogram. Not sure what he would reprogram.Next mechanic said Vats key by pass.I can do the by pass myself..I know there are more than just the key that can be the issue..Being that this started with the battery being disconnected, which problem do you guys think it might be.All suggestions welcomed.Thanks. barczy01
The wires in the ignition lock cylinder were a problem and would break. If you can, ohm out the key and get a reading. I can mail you a resistor pack or I can show you how to make one. I always bypassed the lock cylinder and wired it up under the column. https://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Install-Bay-GM-VATS-Bypass-Kit-Installer-15-Pack-Car-Remote-Start-Resistors/190786971851?hash=item2c6bca28cb%3Ag%3Aeo8AAMXQBuNQ4yl3%3Asc%3AUSPSFirstClass%2146205%21US%21-1&_sacat=0&_nkw=gm+resistor+pack&_from=R40&rt=nc&LH_TitleDesc=

He gave 2 prices.$100 to reprogram or $300 if he had to replace a circuit board?

OK,just weird that this only started the day the battery was changed...I've read about the fix..Only question I have is anything different because it's an 02?Still two white wires in an orange covering? Thanks for your help,I'm sure I'll be asking more questions.
rockfangd
It is likely coincidence that it happened when battery was replaced. The wires are so small and brittle. I have taken many columns apart and wondered how they stayed together. Sometimes just raising or lowering the steering wheel or hitting the column just right can cause one of the 2 wires to break and bam. Seems to be worse on 00-02. BodybyFisher
I'm sorry if I missed this but did you check for codes? Have you tried disconnecting the battery for 5 min and reconnecting? I am not a fan of rewiring unless all options are exhausted. What codes do you have? Did you disconnect the battery and try again? BugsyC
I agree with you.Only if absolutely needed...The only current or pending code is P0446...evap emission system control vent..If you know what to do about that,I could use the help. Otherwise lots of history codes...There was one B2711..open circuit pellet key used after good key...That was in history. So,that might be what's going on...I only get the wait 3 minutes like 1 out of 10 start attempts...I'll live with it till it gets worse..I know the fix....I have not disconnected the battery, that's what started all this.....My main problem is I'm leaking coolant overnight..I have a drip pan underneath and it varies from a half pint to a quart in the morning....I'm going to put dex cool in and the tabs...How many tabs do you put in at one time?? Thanks for your help...
BodybyFisher
That certainly feels like the ignition switch is acting up. I had the same problem with an 02 Monte Carlo, replaced the key assembly. I would disconnect the battery, that will not cause anymore harm. Rebooting the system and deleting codes helps I would find and buy CRC 2-26 it is a lube that improves electrical properties, see photo. Lowes has it. Shoot a little in the lock with the red straw, (unless you are in California, ? and key and move the key in and out. If you have a big coolant leak the tabs won't stop it. Have you looked around to see where its leaking from? I can help if you tell me approximately where its coming from. Use 4 tabs if you go that route. rockfangd
Just for the heck of it inspect the pellet on the key. Check to see if the contacts are worn, loose, or damaged. Also check the resistance of the key. If you have another key use that one for awhile and see if the problem reoccurs. Which side is the coolant leaking on? Passenger side would likely be surge tank or crossover pipes Rear would be crossover pipes likely Driver side could be crossover, waterpump, waterpump housing or hose Front is likely radiator. Look for swelling in the tanks. Very common GM FAN FOREVER Nice, clean, luxury= fine automobile
BugsyC
Coolant leak is on pass. side..I have a second key and it does the same thing...I just got a radiator pressurizer today.I'll take a good look tomorrow....Do you know anything about the emission evap system vent control? rockfangd
If it is what I think it is. It is on the driver side right by the egr. Has 1 vacuum line going from the top of the intake to it, and one line coming out. I just did mine on my 97. The nipple was broke off at the sensor. Passenger side of the engine or toward the front?
