Bruce Nunnally
Eighteen months ago on a Hollywood sound stage, General Motors hosted a hush-hush meeting for 35 of the biggest names in entertainment. http://www.autoweek.com/news.cms?newsId=101914 "We wanted to put the Escalade out in front of the people recognized as understanding 'cool,' " says Cadillac Marketing Director Jay Spenchian. "We wanted to see if they thought we were headed in the right direction. That way we still had time to make some modifications if we needed to." ... Cadillac will use VIP focus groups for selected vehicles such as the next-generation Cadillac CTS. Says Spenchian: "Rather than us sitting around thinking something is cool, why not get others who are cool to verify that for us?" Bob D
Sounds cool to me.. That's Cadillac using their collective heads. (For a change?) It'll now be interesting to see how that 2007 model turns out. Another poll? '93 STS.. opened, dropped, wide...fast.
Brad
It is my feeling that if Cadillac really wants to change how it is perceived as a brand and continue to become this sportier, younger brand then it needs to engage in these types of activities. In terms of marketing, Cadillac needs to make vehicles that the VIP focus group types will be interested in and BUY. If they find it appealing (keeping in mind that this group is emulated by so many people in our country) then others who aspire to be like them will buy them. The Cadillac Escalade is the perfect example of this type of thinking. Simple concept really, but it kind of amazes me how revolutionary a thought the press makes this sound. I guess winning the hearts and minds game is pretty tough indeed. I think that Cadillac has a great opportunity here with their brand. For example, I am 29 years old and bought my '99 Concours in late 2001. My father owned an '84 Deville which became my first car and so the love for Cadillac was born. However, once it came time for me to buy my own car, I still wanted a Cadillac because I loved the idea of what Cadillac stood for - classy and top of the line. But I didn't want the cushy old fart version that the '84 Deville was. Then one day I spied the Concours, with it's floor shifter, bucket seats and center console, analog gauges and of course the 300hp. Add black on black and I was sold right then and there. My point is, I wanted the prestige of the Cadillac name and heritage coupled with a sportier car. The Concours and STS were the first steps, in my opinion, and it looks like Caddy is moving in the right direction - for me anyway. Sorry for the long post, just figured I would speak a bit on a Friday........ Have a good weekend. tmpafford
Have you seen the P-Diddy Pepsi commercial? They are making fun of Cadillac's marketing ploy. Cadillac actually gave the Escaldes to "cool" people so that others would follow. Lemmings! But it worked!
JasonA
Ironic, as Hollywood is the last place I personally look for opinions on what's "cool" and what's not. It seems that in general, if Hollywood thinks it's cool, I probably don't. Methinks it's interesting how they love the Toyota Prius for its economy and green-ness, but when it comes time to showing up somewhere, somehow they're in a gas-guzzling Escalade or H2. It's puzzling. Jason(2001 STS, White Diamond) "When you turn your car on...does it return the favor?"

Scotty
Ditto, Ditto, Ditto Early on sailors navigated by the stars at night and the North star became the symbol for finding ones way home. Once you know where the Northstar is you can point your ship in the right direction to get home.
