cadillac_caddy_sts
I see all these advertisments for octane booster what does this do they say it increases horsepower and all this is this the case and will it hurt the engine? Whats the hole point to it? Defending Northstar perf a qtr mile at a time!!!!
rollingthunder1994
Honestly, I tried a few of them, and i see no difference at all. Just use premium unleaded and i thin that all you need. Back in the 80's when i was racing my 78 Trans Am, i got caught up in all the octane boost stuff. I got older and wise. Just a waste of money IMO Jeff
cadillac_caddy_sts
O I was looking at some that was at an autostore and it was a race formula that wasn't street legal and thought it sounded like it would do something! danbuc
There really is no point to it. The octane ratings for fuel, simply indicate their resistance to detonation (premature combustion. An engine such as the older Nothstars (1999 and older) are running over 10:1 compression. This means that without the knock sensor to retard the timing, the fuel would combust prematurely, and cause a knock, and could damage the engine over a long period of time. This is the main reason most drag cars with compression rations up in the 14's require Nitro Methenol (alchohol) as a fuel. Gasoline simply burn too hot, and too soon. The Nitro Methanol burn slower, and much cooler than gasoline, and help keep the engine from destroying itself. This is why most supercharged, or turbocharged engines run about 7.5-8.5:1 compression. This helps reduce the need for a High octane race fuel, or an alchohol mixture. In short, adding octane booster to a Cadillac is not gonna do much, other than make money dissappear from your wallet. rollingthunder1994
When i use to use them years ago. After a while i started having carburator trouble, i would look inside of the barrels and notice discoloration and a varnish type of substance on the carburator. You could just imagine what that stuff would do to fuel injectors. After reading post and still doing experiments of my own because i'm still curious, i really don't think there is any more power you can get out of the NS, except for freeing up back pressure by changing the exhaust
cadillac_caddy_sts
Okay thanks guys! I just seen it and was curious! I just loved the sound of non street legal! It does do something. It puts your money in their pockets. "Not street legal" makes it sound like the forbidden fruit and therefore a must have at any price (good marketing but snake oil non the less). You could just imagine what that stuff would do to fuel injectors. And spark plugs and oxygen sensors! I think it's called MMT, and it's a nasty additive to gasoline fuels that creates a reddish deposit on almost everything. These octane boosters are mostly MMT in some cases.
