i appreciate everyone who takes time to read this thread. I have a 1996 Cadillac deville, instrument cluster does not display. I am looking for anyone who can help in my repair or provide any information in the repair of my cluster display. I am aware that it is possible to replace lcd with a used unit, i have tried twice both worked for a few seonds to maybe a min and quit. I am not looking to replace unit only repair. there is no apparent damage to board, pins, or solder. The biggest problem i have is a lack of information, as common a problem as this is somebody can point me in the right direction. i am ford certified so electrical work is nothing new to me so dont be afraid to go into detail. AGAIN I AM NOT LOOKING TO REPLACE ONLY REPAIR any information given could help alot of owners so any an all help is appreciated

Here is a thread you can go through.  We had a fellow recently that had the same problem, his name was Samuel, you will see him post at the end.   I think he replaced the panel and he was ok, but that didn't work for you.   See if this thread is helpful.    Do you have the factory service manual?

thanks for posting that info i skimmed through it, imma do some testing on circuits tomorrow an i noticed you posted something about a p0717 iss code i have that code right now too. it was in the car b4 when the cluster worked but now it comes back every time i erase it.  I wonder if it could possibly be shorting out my cluster. But anyway imma also take it to a chevy dealership an let em pull any body codes for me tomorrow too, and to answer your question i do not have a manual for it, i do have the manual for the car but not a service manual. I usually use the internet for everything ive always found the information i needed but i always have to find the right place to look. again i appreciate your time an effort in helping me and the future cadi community

Yes, its due to the Input Speed Sensor, and you need to get into the side pan.   I have a thread on it someplace when you are ready.   The P0717 has nothing to do with the instrument panel.

You can pull your own codes ALL CODES including body, look at my signature, hold OFF and HIGH at the same time.   Review at the link in my signature, Mike

If the cluster is not working the user will not be able to identify the codes.

And I will say for the Record they are not a common problem. I have owned several and have worked and dealt with tons, all of the same generation, and none have had any issues with the display. On the hottest of days, or the coldest of days.

Welcome to the forum.

Just out of curiosity have you tried unhooking the battery for a short while and reconnecting it? That reboots the systems and can resolve weird issues

alright when i first brought the car home the cluster worked we had no title for it so we let it sit up, it had already sit up a few yr b4 we got it. longstory short when we get the title the cluster quit workn. i round up enough dolla bills to go get the cluster put it in it works fot maybe 30 sec to a min a quits. i figure well maybe it was jus time for the junk cluster to go out jus like mine did after sitn up not being used. my buddy swaps me out another one an it does the same works for maybe 10 seconds quits displaying an doesnt work anymore. so now i feel like i gotta problem somewere else killn my cluster.an imma be honest if u look at this style cluster,a buick century, and silverado tahoe u name it gm clusters seem the be very similar in design an wat i noticed in a few videos is there are a couple resistors to the top right of the circuit board. on the century i seen were poor solder joints kept the display from lighting they resoldered the resistors an presto it lights up again. well i try an ohm out the resistor on the board but its OL out of limits like a open. not sure if it is a accurate test still on the board????? i disconnected battery an fuses b4 installing the second cluster too so still didnt make a difference. so basically wat im sayn is by looking at the similarities between the 3 different style boards its possible that these resistors power the display.  A resistor should have a ohm spec either it is not  possible to test on circuit board or its jus open an i already found a possible cause correct? imma cross my fingers an hopefully some can shead sum light on the ohm test with resistor on circuit board
